Meet June Rubin

Today we’d like to introduce you to June Rubin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have achieved national recognition as an artist, illustrator, art director and teacher. Graduate of University of California, Los Angeles with an Anthropology degree and then the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. My extensive travels to Bali and beyond have greatly influenced my art. I also rely on dreams and daydreams to inspire themes in my paintings and mixed media works such as “diamonds in the veins”. I enjoy using whimsy and vibrant colors in my work. I recently finished the June Rubin “World of Cats” 2019 Cat Art Calendar which includes a different cat for very month, such as Coco Chanel Cat with her pearl necklace as well as San Diego Cat with Balboa Park in the background.

My artwork has been exhibited in group and solo shows at Sophie’s Gallery, San Diego Watercolor Society, La Jolla Athenaeum, and Art Walk San Diego. I currently work from my studio/gallery in Liberty Station in San Diego, California. My website: JuneRubin.com

Please tell us about your art.
My art is upbeat and colorful. I share my love of nature, people and animals. At times I have included images of my family, a rice goddess from Bali and Godzilla holding a baby wearing a pink hat in his arms. I don’t always know for sure why I paint what I paint, but I follow the thread of my dreams and record the beauty of my travels. I painted scenes of Yosemite and found that people loved them as much as I enjoyed capturing the magnificent beauty I found there.

I was inspired by my sister’s love of cats to create cat collages. People get a giggle out of my Coco Chanel Cat, Feather Puss with feather whiskers, or Carlsbad Cat with the flower fields in the background. If you look at a figure that I have painted and a story comes to you about what the model was thinking as I painted her, I am delighted. It may be that you just love the colors I used to paint the bay tree, or the sunflowers in the neighbor’s yard – that’s good enough for me.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think artists of all types tend to be on the cutting edge, many times speaking out sooner than the general public on important issues of the day. Some are more involved in expressing their thoughts regarding politics, injustice, war and peace. I keep my eyes open to all that I see nationally and internationally. No matter what is going on in the world, one can always come back to beauty of a flower. I choose to paint joyful images. There may come a time where I express global or national issues.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
