Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Dilmore.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego with my family almost 6 years ago. As a child I was an avid comic book and anime reader. Since then, creating art has been a major part of my life. When I was younger, I spent most of my time drawing comic book characters, horror scenes, and punk rock album covers. I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday and haven’t looked back since. I developed a huge appreciation for tattoo artistry which eventually led to me becoming a tattoo artist myself.
Please tell us about your art.
I work as a full time tattoo artist at Even Tide Tattoo in a small town called Cardiff By The Sea in San Diego. As a tattoo artist, I enjoy creating black and grey pieces working with elements of nature, geometry based art and patterns. In my free time, I enjoy making high contrast images with my relief prints, try to infuse nature in my pen and ink work, have created my own form of art that is mostly geometry based utilizing graphite and charcoal and lastly, I use quill pen inks to create a certain type of feel with some of my pen and ink watercolor pieces. There really is no hidden message. I don’t pull inspiration from any one particular artist. I pull inspiration from what I see outside in the world and what I hear. I can see a dead leaf on the ground and that will get my mind working on something, or I can hear a certain lyric in a song and want to create an entire series from it. I believe art was created to make people feel things. I’m not sure what each piece would make any one person feel, but I hope I can make them feel something, maybe bring a moment of beauty into someone’s life.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
To be perfectly honest, most of my time is spent spending quality time with my family so I don’t really hang out with any artists which makes it a little difficult to answer this question. In my experience the challenge would be how difficult it is to get people to see what you’ve created with how inundated people are with pictures and information on social media. Also, trying to find a way to have your work stand out and be recognized as your own is a challenge.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
As of right now, my only platform is Instagram: @justindilmore. Other than for that, you would have to come in and get tattooed by me.
