Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Frank.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Justin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was part owner of S&M Sausage and Meat. It closed in November of 2016. While it was open, I realized that my favorite part of the business was doing events. It got me out of the four walls and I got to be part of really cool events all over San Diego. We did Kaaboo, Beer Festivals, Best of Parties, etc… After S&M closed, I knew I wanted to get back in the event world. I partnered up with my lifelong friend Devin (we grew up together) and we brainstormed. We decided on Grilled Cheese, because it’s so universal. Everyone loves grilled cheese! We spent a couple weeks taste testing, (yes, it was awesome!) and we opened on January 4th, 2017. We started with one tent and have grown it to three Bread and Cheese Catering tents and we opened another business called Pineapple Crush in early June, so we have 4 tents now. Pineapple Crush makes Pineapple Smoothies and serves them in the Pineapple. We have been really lucky with the people that work with us. We have a great team and love our jobs!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it has been pretty smooth, our biggest argument was over our titles when we made our business cards. We ended up being the Head Cheese and Head Loafer (my dad’s idea).
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bread and Cheese Catering – what should we know?
I can say pretty confidently, that it is the best grilled cheese sandwich you’ll ever have. That is truly what makes me the most proud about Bread and Cheese Catering.
I think there are a couple things that make our sandwich stand out, but the biggest is the bread. I’ve always said a sandwich can only be as good as the bread you put it on. We get our bread from Bread and Cie (local bakery). We have a couple other secrets that make our grilled cheese sandwiches the best in SD, but you’ll have to come try one to find out!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think Bread and Cheese Catering has been successful because we realized from the beginning that we weren’t serving food, we were building a brand. We wanted people to have our grilled cheese and the experience to be so good that they want to find us again. We want them to follow us, to track us down, to come to a brewery because we were there. To get someone to have that strong of a feeling, you have to have more than just good food. You have to look professional, you have to have a great logo that stands out and is memorable, you have to have a great interaction with the people who take your order and who made your food, your equipment has to be clean, and you have to have an amazing product. It is so easy to falter on any of those, the brands the do well long term excel in everything, not just making good food.
