Today, we’d like to introduce you to Justin Frank.
Hi Justin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We started Bread and Cheese Catering in 2017 from a food tent going to breweries and farmer’s markets.
We opened a couple of restaurants in 2019 but had to close them both during Covid days. After Covid, we became the concessionaires at Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista in 2021. In 2023, we opened a restaurant in Oceanside, CA, and added a second brand called “And Breakfast Burritos.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s always been a lot of work, but from when we started in 2017 to 2020, we had continual growth. I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but at least we were going in the right direction. 2020 was very hard for the business.
Luckily, we were able to pay our bills by getting grants and PPP loans. We definitely consider ourselves very fortunate to have made it through that section of time. After covid, we had to rebuild our catering team and business, and landing the Moonlight Contract from the City of Vista was huge for us.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bread and Cheese Eatery & Breakfast Burritos?
We are a dual-concept restaurant. We specialize in two things and treat them as two separate businesses in the same physical location. Each brand has its own website/yelp page/etc.
The two brands, Bread and Cheese Eatery – Specialize in Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. It can be eaten at the restaurant or taken to go. We can cater to up to 1000 people.
And Breakfast Burritos – Makes the best breakfast burritos you’ve ever had! Great by yourself or for your whole school/office!
What does success mean to you?
That is a deep question! Success is so many things to so many people.
In so many respects, we are successful! We have achieved our ultimate goal of being entrepreneurs and forging our own path. We are growing the business, we employ over 50 people, and we are paying the bills while putting some money into our pockets.
But we also have failures every day; we make mistakes, and we are still learning. I’d consider myself and the business successful, but how do I define it? That’s for each person to decide for themselves.
