Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaelee Burnett.
Kaelee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I believe in life that nothing happens on accident and that everything in our journey is for us to grow and become the people we were meant to be here on earth. My story really began before I was ever born and is not finished yet!
At a sleepover one night in elementary school, I did a makeover with my Mom’s makeup on a few of my classmates. I will never forget the confidence I saw right away in the girls when they looked at themselves and loved how they looked and felt. The confidence they exuded made me feel proud of what I had done and like I served them in some way. Instantly I was hooked on making people over! In high school, I struggled in all subjects but really looked forward to any function or school dance where I could do someone’s makeup!
When it was time to graduate, my parents expected me to go to college and follow in my sister’s footsteps but I really was not motivated to work towards a corporate job. When I found out that there was a trade school to learn how to do facials and makeup and you could make a long term career out of that, I instantly knew that’s what I wanted to do!
In 2004, shortly after graduating school to be an Esthetician, I started working at a spa close to Washington D.C. and quickly got promoted to Spa Manager. I eventually moved back to California and started working in Beverly Hills doing facials and brow shaping on celebrities and high profile clients. I thought I had finally landed my “dream job” but somehow felt empty at the end of the day.
I started to explore what I felt was missing, I left the industry and focused on seeking God and exploring my faith. During this transition, I was gifted by an anonymous founder at my church with a fully funded Mission Trip to Costa Rica. There, I had the honor of serving in a women’s ministry where I taught self-care, how to shape eyebrows and did a makeover on each woman. I felt so much joy being able to help these women who had been depressed, abused and repressed for so long to feel confident, loved and beautiful. That’s where it all clicked for me. I was to use the talents God had given me to show his love for others. I was just trying to be a vehicle for him and The Brown Bunny Co. was born!
Has it been a smooth road?
I do not think anything in life is meant to be a smooth road! I believe that we do our best growing in the times of a struggle! I think my biggest struggle was learning how to be confident enough in myself. I struggle with depression and for so long, I did not know how to manage it and I was ashamed of it. I had horrible acne when I was in my early 20’s and just wanted to run away and hide. I seriously considered putting a bag over my face or wearing a mask. I remember while working at a makeup counter once at a department store a male customer came up to me and said “ who would even hire you here with that acne? That should just not be allowed.” I let that comment affect me for so long and made me second guess my abilities. I learned along the way that you can’t let others bring you down. People will always have their perceptions, thoughts, and opinions but you should never take them personally. Don’t ever let another person determine your path or ruin your confidence! You are uniquely made and loved!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Brown Bunny Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
A Brown Bunny symbolizes renewing and that is exactly my goal for anyone who leaves their visit with me. I specialize in brow shaping, lash lifts and event makeup. I am known for my service “the non-surgical eye lift”. This service is fully customized and instead of just coming in for a lash service. Your entire eye area is treated and naturally lifted! I am not a total hater when it comes to injections or plastic surgery, but I do believe the aging process is a beautiful thing and I am able to see the beauty in anyone and enhance natural features!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the laid back culture here in San Diego! I love that everyone is so diverse and that diversity is so accepted and encouraged! I think the one thing I would change about San Diego if I could is the growing population of rattlesnakes!!
I love hiking but hate running into those things!
