Meet Kahlee of SD State of Mind in Mira Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahlee.

Kahlee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been creating Hip-Hop music, events and related art for 15 years. From event and tour organizing, graphic work, licensing, of course performing, writing and more. From a high school kid freestyling with friends at parties to rocking thousands of fans, to creating a local community staple where all levels of experience share vibes weekly.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just trying to succeed in a career where creativity is the driving force is tough. I’ve grown to love the business aspect and find the creativity in that too. There’s always struggle and will continue to be on every level but overcoming that is an art in itself.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My first solo album was called “Man of Many Hats” and I feel that still best describes me. I’m an emcee/lyricist first off, which has become a bridge between any tool or service a music artist needs, from graphic design and promotion to event organizing, PR and everything in between. I run a graphic design company, organize hip-hop events, stage-manage festivals, I host a weekly radio show and working on a few other things. I may be known for a number of those things as well as for my recent Hip-Hop release, “SD State of Mind.”

What were you like growing up?
I had three older siblings 8-10 years older than me, which allowed me to mature quicker than others my age. Because of the age difference, I think I grew up a mix of a younger brother and an only child. Of course, my parents, brother and sisters taught me many things, but I also taught myself a lot like how to swim, tie my shoes and ride a bike. I tinkered with things to understand the inner workings and observed interactions between my siblings and friends who would stay at our house often or come with us on family trips. Most of my high school friends were the oldest in their family and I noticed there was always a disconnect. These are some of the things that got me into psychology and what I feel makes me different in most things that I do. Always approaching something from a different perspective.
