Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahlil Justice.
Kahlil, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first got into photography by just taking pictures on my iPhone. I never thought of taking it seriously but I had a lot of people tell me that I should buy a camera. I started out just taking photos once or twice a week until more people started to recognize my work. This is my first year of taking photography seriously and trying to treat it as more than a hobby.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle of being a landscape photographer is that there’s less demand for my kind of work in comparison to event/model photography. My main focus is selling my images to tourism companies and physical prints. I’m still in the process of becoming a full-time photographer, but I think I’ve made a good start so far.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m known for taking photos that inspire a sense of nostalgia. My photography has a blue and pink color scheme that people recognize as my style of editing. My photos are shot on a wide angle lens which allows people to see the full landscape that I’m capturing. This also gives people a sense that they’re in the photo enjoying the view.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a perfect place for beach photography. I’ve explored pretty much every beach in San Diego County from Imperial Beach to Oceanside. San Diego has some of the best sunsets, especially in fall and winter. San Diego also has a lot of diverse landscapes and cityscapes which allow for a lot of different types of photography.
If someone was just starting out my main recommendation would be to take as many photos as possible. The more pictures you take the more you get a feel for what you like and what makes your photography unique.
