Meet Kaitlin Cooper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlin Cooper.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story doesn’t begin with me picking up a camera at a young age and suddenly wanting to be a photographer. In fact, if you were to travel back in time to ask my 5-year-old self what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you a pink bunny. Yup, I legit wanted to transform into a cute, pink, fuzzy bunny, and my parents were too nice to crush my 5-year-old dreams, so they went along with it.

Luckily, somewhere along the way, I realized being a bunny wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. 🙂 In college, I got a job in the darkroom for photography, where I learned all about film cameras and creating prints. It was there that I fell in love with the art and technique of photography and knew I wanted to incorporate it into my career. I later switched over to digital, though having the background in film really helped me appreciate the entire process of taking photos. While simultaneously working in the darkroom, I also interned at a local wedding photography studio and learned the business aspects of owning a photography business and how to create an amazing client experience. I discovered I loved the business side just as much as the photography itself, so enter wedding photography!

Please tell us about your art.
I knew I wanted to serve people through my love of photography, and when deciding which area of photography to focus on, weddings seemed like such a natural choice for me. Not only do I love the beauty of the wedding day, but I love the entire journey a couple goes on together leading up to it. From their engagement session to the wedding, I want to capture their story unfolding as their love, affection, respect, and hearts grow deeper and stronger for one another.

I work to provide a personalized and unique client experience to each of my couples, so that by the time the wedding day happens, it feels as if we are best friends. This helps make the couple comfortable in front of the camera, allowing me to capture the authentic joy and raw emotions I strive for in my art. When clients (along with their friends and family) receive the images, my goal is for them to feel and relive all of the emotions from the wedding day – if they can do this, I know I’ve done my job. 🙂

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think as artists, we are all storytellers, and that has always been one of our roles. The art we create might be purely aesthetic or it might document the raw and current events happening in our society (both beautiful and unsettling), and at the root of the work, there is a story. As new events occur, the way they are documented and presented might change, but at the end of the day, the art will still reflect a story told through the eyes of that artist.
