Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Sulger.
Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first had acupuncture when I was 22 years old for facial rejuvenation treatments. I was doing runway modeling and my friends were doing it for wrinkles. I had a good impression of acupuncture but did not know the full range of what it worked with.
Later on in life, I was trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant. I ended up seeing an acupuncturist and was pregnant within 5 months. I was also so inspired by her on my first treatment that I decided to become an acupuncturist. I had no idea it treated such a wide variety of conditions, and when I met her I knew that this is what I wanted to do.
I ended up getting pregnant and starting school in the same week. So my oldest daughter is 24 years old, and I have been in practice for 20 years.
It is a wonderful field to be in because so many people get better.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes. I had my first daughter during the first year of acupuncture school which was a challenge.
I accept insurance, and this has also been a challenge. The overhead goes up when one takes insurance, and the income goes down. I wanted to treat everyone, not just those who could afford my services.
I also lost my father during this time. In addition, I became a single parent. I have a wonderful family and great friends who supported me through these transitions.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Acupuncture Continuum – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have a general practice and all types of patients with many different health concerns. I do specializing two areas:
- Fertility and women’s health concerns
- The treatment of pain — low back pain, neck pain, migraines, abdominal pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis and golfers’ elbow, foot pain, knee pain.
We have had many “acupuncture babies” — women who have gotten pregnant while having acupuncture to help their fertility. We also have many success stories in the treatment of pain, skin conditions, digestive complaints, etc.
We are a busy practice, but find time to spend with each patient and individualize each patient’s treatment to help them have optimal health. Our treatments are a generous one hour. The atmosphere in our offices is very beautiful and relaxing and conducive to healing.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love both Encinitas and Bankers’ Hill. We have the best weather around, beautiful beaches, great restaurants, lots of things to do. I am a Californian through and through.
I could pass on heavy traffic, but it’s way less than the traffic in L.A. so I am thankful!
