Meet Karina Montes Vizcarra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Montes Vizcarra (Karikatura).

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Since my childhood, I was very restless and curious, I liked to dance, draw and create things with my hands. At school I was very distracted, I just spent the class drawing, immerse myself in my stories and fantasies.
Always inspired by music, cinema, books, classic paintings, nature, the sense an emotion that transmitted me, transported me, this formed me a sense of sensitivity and emotion.

I decided to study visual arts, but my path just started a few years after the end of the college. I began to participate in small group exhibitions, and trying to show my work, which has changed a lot over time, I know it is normal and we are all changing and getting closer each time to what really resembles more what we want to express. I studied a time “Haute Couture” after that I dedicated to make clothes, handbags and jewelry, and distributed them in design stores in the city. I stopped that side some years ago, it was a phase that I enjoyed a lot and maybe in the future I would resume it. Now, I’m concentrate in my experiments with painting and sculpture.

Nowadays, I also paint, sculpt and make jewelry, which I really enjoy. I have also had the opportunity to participate with props jewelry and scenography in stop motion videos, it is a wonderful world, where I learned many things and I would love to participate again one day.

Please tell us about your art.
Mainly paint with oils and acrylics, epoxy, and clay in for sculptures. Sometimes I make previous sketches to have a clearer idea of what I’m going to do, but I’m also a lover of letting myself go and intuitively start working, it seems very magical to see the result of starting to create and flow, that way I feel that I’m in a channel and comes from an energy of my higher self. I enjoy the light, the darkness and the nuances of those feelings that are in the middle, that do not have a name. I paint what is not expressed in words, giving life to creatures that join the mystery of an image that speaks for itself. I’m a lover of the exempt, sometimes a bit of those human characteristics, trying to represent them with creatures, trying to achieve certain reflection. I’m in the constant search for a visual language in which I can transmit what I feel.

Creating for me is a necessity, it is a way of life, human behavior and animal beauty are great inspirations for me, I like to create hybrids of humans with animals, I focus on the eyes, for me it is important to give them life, since they are the reflection of the soul. You will also see in my work a sense of humor, I like to laugh at myself, not take things so seriously, humor is important in my life and it is reflected.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
