After graduating from Buffalo State University in 2009 with a degree in Fine Art, Karissa moved to San Diego, CA and began instructing art classes. In 2014 she founded Paint & Party where she enjoys helping people tap into their creative potential and to enjoy themselves in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

The program is designed to provide a unique experience to all guests at a reputable venue or privately booked party. Each guest is personally instructed by a talented artist, step-by-step, to create their own rendition of the featured painting of which they get to leave with and display with great pride. No experience necessary!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I started my own Paint and Sip business I thought I’d just be teaching art class and having fun. I had no idea what running a business and a website would entail. Not to mention how time-consuming producing 10-15 new paintings every month would play into my daily routines.
It’s been an awesome learning experience and I’ve met a lot of really amazing people along the way. Also, my family and friend support staff has been outstandingly present day in and day out. I am so very blessed by all the help that I’ve received.
There are many days that you want to quit. There are many days when the stress is through the roof. There are times when I can’t fathom touching another paintbrush with a ten-foot pole! But, in the end, I wouldn’t have traded this experience for the world and I’m proud to be in the San Diego hub of entrepreneurs.
Please tell us more about your art.
Paint and Party is a Paint and Sip business. We set up paint classes at venues or private homes and supply everything needed to complete a two-hour painting. You are guided step by step by a professional artist and although we all set out to paint the same subject everyone’s artwork turns our unique. You don’t need any prior artistic knowledge to do this, in fact, most people have never painted before.
I think we are most proud when we get to do a fundraising event. It is an amazing feeling knowing that you can help others in some way, whether it be big or small. Fundraising allows us to donate half the proceeds to a charity or organization in need. Some of the most memorable fundraisers we’ve done were with Good Dog! Autism Companions. We’ve helped children with Autism raise money for service dogs
At Paint and Party, we pride ourselves on choosing cool artwork that has a great composition. No lame artwork here! What sets us apart from our competition is our professional knowledge and skill level. Often, we are complemented on our patience and relaxing style of teaching. We are most proud of the relationships we have made with the venues and with the public. Our business has a 75% return customer rate!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over and do it all again I think I would tell myself to not be afraid of success. I was nervous to expand too quickly in the beginning. Now I think that expanding to as many venues as possible helps grow the business faster. Most of my business growth comes from word of mouth so it would’ve helped to do it differently in the beginning. But, no regrets!
