Meet Karissa Purczynski of Gainslinger Training and Sports Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karissa Purczynski.

Hi Karissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We got started after making the decision to live life on our own terms, to pursue what was meaningful to us first. We figured if we could find a way to make that work, then we could certainly help others do the same. That’s what Gainslinger has been all about, helping people get honest about “what’ they want to accomplish, then working together to discover the “how”. We happen to do this through the channel of health and fitness but it extends far beyond that. We always tell people we are “coaches” not “trainers”. A trainer tells you “what” to do, a coach takes on the responsibility of discovering the “how”.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our path before this endeavor was smooth but unfulfilling. When this new adventure began we jumped in headfirst and have been met with nearly every challenge you can imagine. My business partner/Husband and I left our comfortable jobs and steady pay for zero income initially and very little in the way of a plan to succeed. We relied simply on going as far as we could each day, knowing that when we got there, we would be able to see further. We lived in a 25-year-old RV for 3 years with no hot water nor heat. We utilized a 2001 Chevy van as an office with only a Chromebook and a wifi hotspot to get started. There continues to be challenges but we become stronger and more equipped with each one.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in strength/conditioning and nutrition for action sports athletes but have offerings for nearly any health goal you can imagine. What has made us unique is that we focus on maximum potential for each client. People often set their goals based upon what they think they can achieve, we like to challenge them to go after what they truly desire, to chase what would be possible if they had no limitations in time, money or responsibility. Someone might come to us whose goal is to complete a 5k, but when we get down to it we find that they would rather win a marathon if that was an option. We frame what is possible by revealing that it takes no more effort to pursue a higher goal than it does to settle. This is the principle of 1 Corinthians 9:24; everyone who runs in a race goes into strict training, effort is required. So if the effort and sweat is unavoidable, why run in such a way that would focus on anything less than victory?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
In the third grade there was a group of girls in my class that told me I could be in their club if I would bark like a dog. I knew it was an act of submissiveness even at that age. I refused, and that to this day this has been one of the most empowering and formative memories of my life. It is better to stand alone with dignity and a clear conscience rather than sell out for the approval of others.
