Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Purificacion.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Most people assume I come from a culinary background but I actually don’t. I was in the fashion industry for six years but really have a degree in Business. Even in those six years, I was always in the sales, merchandising, and branding.
Opening my shop happened organically. I wanted to have something that was mine and something that reflected my background as a Filipina-American woman. My love for coffee and business made it clear that I wanted to open a coffee shop with a little twist. With the help of my bakers, I was able to create pastries and desserts that are unique yet mainstream enough so it wouldn’t be intimidating for people who have never tried our Filipino flavors.
It’s been a process and I’ve learned so much… yet I never stay comfortable. I’m constantly thinking of new things with longevity (versus trendy or gimmicky food or drinks). We are at the heart of it a coffee shop but we bake so much in a day we’re really a mini bakery! Our customers often will buy boxes or dozens of our goodies at one time. We’re actually celebrating our two years this coming April 28, 2018, time flew by!
My fiancé who is in the US Navy lives in San Diego and because of this 1) we are completely military/law-enforcement friendly here at the shop and give our everyday heroes 10% off their orders and 2) San Diego is my preferred location for my second shop. 🙂
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming from fashion, I never experienced working in a male-dominated industry. Opening up my shop was challenging being a younger (and a female) entrepreneur, you’re constantly undermined and taken advantage of.
On another note, the culinary side of the business was a struggle at first because I had zero backgrounds in cooking or baking. But, I always had a clear vision of what I wanted and knew what flavors I wanted to work with. Through a lot of trial and experimentation, I was able to come to this place where we really honed in on what we’re good at and what our customers love!
Please tell us about Kape Republik.
I am the founder of Kape Republik. I like to be very hands-on, I function as both a barista and a baker if need be.
We are most known for our Ube (Filipino Sweet Yam) goodies. The most popular being our Ube Crinkle cookies (soft, moist, ube cookies) and our Purple Rain (our purple yam iced drink).
I am most proud of our growth. For such a new business (with no corporate or marketing backing), we have become quite well known in and out of our area. It’s common for people to come in and order huge boxes to fly or travel with because their loved ones have heard of our pastries. It’s humbling really! I often cater for birthday parties, weddings, and corporate events as well.
I’m also so proud of my team. Between my 7 baristas, 2 bakers, and my parents (who constantly check in to help and support me).. we’ve really created a positive and relaxing place where anyone and everyone can feel welcome. Our customer service along with unique French/American – Filipino fusion pastries set us apart from other coffee shops and bakeries.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up internationally and that has really helped me be fearless in business and trying out new things/flavors all the time.
