Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasia Gregorczyk.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kasia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from Cal State University, Fullerton in 2012 with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. During my college years, I did two internships at KTLA 5 in Los Angeles and spent one summer interning for their sister station WGN in Chicago. I took all that experience with me to my first job as a morning news reporter for WSAW Newschannel 7 in Wausau, Wis. I spent about a year and a half there before moving on to my second TV news job in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During my three years at KOB 4, I worked a range of shifts and ended my time there as a reporter and weekend anchor. In the summer of 2018, I accepted my current reporting position at FOX 5 San Diego and feel very lucky to be doing what I love back in my home state.
Has it been a smooth road?
Hardly! I left everything I’d ever known for my first job in the middle of a state I had never even been to, all to make minimum wage for the sake of chasing my dream. Each step of the way I’ve experienced different cultures and lifestyles than I was used to, but it’s all helped shape who I am today. I felt alone at times, worlds away from what all my hometown friends and family members were doing. I have missed more holidays and birthdays than I can count, but the people who love and support me most know just how much my career means to me and have been tremendously understanding.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a nightside reporter for FOX 5, which means I work from early afternoon through our latest 11 p.m. newscast. Each day is different. I could be sent to a fire, weather event, city council meeting, crime scene or anything you can think of. We don’t know what the day will bring until we get to work! I am responsible for conducting interviews, writing my own stories, and then presenting that information during a live report. Working for FOX 5 San Diego feels like I’m a member of a big family. We all come from very different backgrounds, but yet are very supportive of each other and constantly rooting each other on. That is something you truly don’t find in every newsroom or workplace in general.
A huge part of my job hinges on our amazing community members who have story ideas, concerns, or things they want to bring to our attention. I hope anyone reading this can feel inspired to get in touch with me or any of my coworkers the next time they’d like to see the news shed light on something.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I love most about San Diego is there is never a shortage of things to do or see. I love trying new restaurants and doing anything that takes me outdoors. San Diego has it all plus gorgeous weather. I also love that it’s still a down to earth feeling, despite being a big city and major tourist destination. The thing I like least… is a tough one, but I’m going to say despite having beautiful weather, I am a sucker for the seasons. I wish we got to experience a true fall and winter. (People who choose to live here might wholeheartedly disagree!)
