Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Evans.
Katherine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for photography started 15 years ago when I was given a Film Canon AE-1. I immediately became a sponge, learning anything and everything I could about the science and business of the hobby. I dove into every type of photography realizing that capturing families and weddings is my favorite! I worked with the best studios in my little towns in Washington, soaking up what I could from the best professionals in my area to then go off and start my own business. I was a Full Time paid Professional by the time I was 21. Years have passed. I’ve continued to take seminars, webinars, attend workshops and expos keeping up with the latest in the industry, always striving for better for my clients. My husband and I moved to Maui a year after marriage, and then to San Diego 2.5 years after that. My career followed, and has continued to stay my passion, of which I’m so thankful!
Has it been a smooth road?
There are times it’s been smooth, and others not so much as I imagine with every independent business! This last year is a great example of overcoming trial in a business! There’s quite an amazing community of photographers here in San Diego, aspiring and professional. Ones that photograph similar to me and others that are quite different. My husband and I tried to get pregnant for 6 years and finally got pregnant unexpectedly this last February. My whole year was pretty much booked up by then with Weddings and Families. No problem, I can work until week 39! Jade, our daughter, had other plans! She wanted to try and come out at 19 weeks so it was critical bed rest for me for the duration of my pregnancy. That’s 21 weeks that ended up being 16 due to her coming early, but safely, praise the Lord. That’s 16 weeks of getting my family sessions and weddings covered and captured with care by fellow associate photographers. I was continuing to book sessions as well, on bed rest, with my clients knowing an associate would be photographing them and I would take care of the front and back end work. At one point I was managing 7 photographers, and 3 weeks of that time was from the hospital. I didn’t have one unhappy client. Fact I continued to get 5 star reviews, won the Best of the Knot 2018, and most of my Clients got our sweet baby a gift. It was quite an amazing year of seeing people’s goodness and willingness to help, and be understanding in a complicated situation.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I photograph Families and Weddings. Often photographers do just one or the other. I love to work with my family’s year after year if at all possible, taking them from client to friend, where we will eventually exchange Christmas cards and get coffee with each-other occasionally! What sets me apart is my experience and knowledge of photography, my ability to make my clients feel comfortable while getting them timeless images, my knowledge of light and my love for working with children at any time. I also am honored to have won Best of the Knot San Diego 4 years in a row, thanks to my incredible Katherine Beth Photography Bridal Family! I’m excited about my Mentor Program that I started last year, that will continue this year as well. I had incredible opportunities working under professionals when I was diving in the career and am happy to help the aspiring photographers of today who share the same passion for photography!
