Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Martin.
Katie, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Katie Martin and I’m the CEO of True to You Medical Aesthetics. I am a certified Physician Assistant specializing in Medical Aesthetics. I was born in Southern California. At the age of 12, my father’s career moved us to Pittsburgh, PA. I attended high school in Pittsburgh and went on to Penn State University for my undergraduate degree in Life Science. After graduation, I went on to the Philadelphia College of Medicine where I earned my Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2010. As soon as I could, I moved to San Diego where the weather was warm and the town was familiar. After practicing Emergency Medicine for five years, I became disheartened by the state of medicine and emergency care. I decided I needed a change. I realized those aesthetics was my new home.
After an extensive amount of soul-searching and support from my husband, I realized I was ready to take the leap of faith and start my practice. With the help of Dr. Holden, my medical director, I founded True to You Medical Aesthetics in May of 2018. In the beginning, I was solely in Fallbrook. I was ecstatic to have two to three patients per week.
Since that time, I have hired an assistant, another Physician Assistant injector, an RN who specializes in medical skincare treatments and an esthetician. We have grown to have three locations in Fallbrook, Oceanside and Murrieta. True to You Medical Aesthetics offers treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers for lips, cheeks and smile lines, Kybella for the unwanted double chin, PDO threads, medical chemical peels, micro needling, dermaplaning and Vitamin injections.
We also provide our services for mobile VIP events throughout the county. Our overall mission is to provide safe, conservative and professional treatments that improve the self-esteem of our patients. I am happily married with two beautiful girls ages three and five. I’m also a puppy mom to a 4lb Yorkie named Maui.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took a lot of faith to leave a full-time job with steady income and benefits to start my own company. However, with the support of my husband and family, we made it work. As a family, we cut back on some luxuries that we were used to. But in the end, it was worth it to be able to follow my dream.
It’s also hard not to stare at my Instagram feed and not feel jealous of what other entrepreneurs have accomplished and compared it to my journey. I always find myself trying to remind myself that everyone is on a different road. It’s important not to compare your middle with someone else’s end.
I’ve struggled with not feeling adequate, thoughts like “who am I to be starting a business?” and “are you good enough?” Through mindset shifts and a lot of internal work, I’ve been able to embrace this place in my life.
Overall, however, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had the support of many new and old friends along the way. From Dr. Holden, my medical director and mentor, to many other professionals in the industry, I have felt a sense of support throughout.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
True to You Medical Aesthetics provides safe and professional medical aesthetic treatments. Our services include Botox/Dysport, dermal fillers for cheeks, lips, smile lines, and more, Kybella for the unwanted fat of the double chin, PDO threads for smoothing, medical chemical peels, micro needling, dermaplaning and vitamin injections.
We are best known for our individualized and conservative treatments. Our goal is to help our patients become the best version of themselves with natural enhancements. Many people may be weary of aesthetics because of the bad work they see their friends endure or on television. My response to that is always, “Yes, but you don’t notice the subtle GOOD work.” We are always striving to provide “good work.”
I am most proud of this company for our integrity. I and the other providers will always do what’s in the best interest of our patients. It’s about building and maintaining relationships of trust more than profit. True to You provides a boutique-like experience for our patients.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future is bright for True to You Medical Aesthetics. We look forward to the New Year and would like to integrate more options for our patients like laser treatments, vitamin infusion therapy and many more ideas coming down the pipeline. We are looking to hire more providers who share our integrity and overall vision for the company.
