Meet Katin Pesarillo of Katin Pesarillo Photography in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katin Pesarillo.

Katin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a sophomore in High School, I had little to no money, so me and my buddy thought of a great idea to start a surfer apparel company where we would sell t-shirts that were a beachy vibe. As we started selling more and more at our school, we had to get a website and Instagram for our brand and for that, you needed to have photos to display. I bought a camera and started taking photos for our social media pages and then when people saw the photos. People started contacting me to take photos of them without our brand. This started to become another business in itself and very soon after, I passed on the brand to my buddy and I started to mainly do photography work. As I kept doing shoots for friends, I then got contacted by multiple brands (SpyOptic, Blackbookbikini, PuraVida Bracelets) that helped with my growth on Instagram. Now I am doing the same stuff, but the main thing that has changed is that I have a manager now who accepts/declines photoshoot bookings and finds me work which is much easier than doing it all by myself. I’m stoked to see what the world has for me in the near future.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It wasn’t always a smooth road to get where I am today. The main thing that I dealt with early on in my photography journey was that lots of people in high school really hated my photos or thought they were straight trash. That kind of got to me and made me almost want to quit photography all in all but I didnt, and I just tuned out all the negativity. The funny thing that is so ironic is that the people that would make remarks about my photos are the ones that say they “really love my work” or “I never doubted you bro, your photos are fire.”

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Katin Pesarillo Photography – what should we know?
My business is that I take lifestyle and portrait photography and I have had multiple years of experience in shooting and I am very confident that I will take the best shots with whoever I am shooting with. I feel like the thing that sets me apart is my sense of picturing pictures in my head before I even take them. I feel like I have a very good eye in taking photos and I get unique shots compared to other photographers.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I want to give a big shoutout to my Aunt Cristina Schaffer, she has taught me soo much about photography like what/and how to use my camera and has taught me the ins and outs of the business side of things when it comes to photography.
