Meet Katy Temple of Katy Temple Media Coaching in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Temple.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About a year ago, I went out on my own and founded Katy Temple Media Coaching. For 20 plus years, I was a sportscaster (and still fill in for KFMB, local news 8). I loved, loved, loved it – everything about it, the sacrifices, the hard work, the intense editing sessions, collaboration, telling people’s stories, nailing a live shot or interview, and recovering from an uncomfortable or sticky situation. 🙂

I now work with sports and business executives to nail their on-camera messaging and on-camera delivery whether it be through corporate videos or the media. I empower my clients with information, experience, and passion, and provide them as many shortcuts as I can. I have felt their pain first hand!

I have always been a TomBoy. My mom told me that when I was a little girl, I got a doll for a gift one birthday and that I threw it over the fence. I grew up in Merced California in a cul-de-sac in a sports-crazy family. That was a perfect combination. I played sports all year around. When I was a little girl, I dreamt of being an Olympic Volleyball player. I was always passionate about sports and people. In high school, I was lucky enough to do a cable sports show and was SOLD! That’s when I knew exactly what I wanted to do. That’s the minute I began to chase the dream.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? I wouldn’t say that but adversity comes in all different shapes and sizes and affects people in a various way. I had to work hard to find the first few jobs I had. I got turned down for a lot of jobs. It took me a long time before I made decent money – a LONG time! I had a people in high positions recommend that I look for other careers.

And television requires various skills that take time to perfect. You’re essentially, growing up or sharpening your skills in front of the community while you’re on television. It’s also a career that can breed insecurity considering the fact that you’re being judged every day on how you look, what you say, and how you say it. There are a lot of sacrifices that go with the business especially the schedule – working weekends and holidays.

My career as a sportscaster prepared me for the challenges of being an entrepreneur. I’ve surrounded myself with a small group of fellow entrepreneurs who have integrity and who I trust. There is no challenge that I’ve faced so far, that they haven’t faced. I’m very lucky to have their insight, advice, and kindness.

Please tell us about Katy Temple Media Coaching.
I work with sports and business owners and executives to nail their on-camera messaging and on-camera delivery. I have a program that I’ve developed by combining my expertise, experience, and passion. This is an interactive process that includes a walk-through of media fundamentals and improvement of on-camera messaging, confidence, and delivery, through video review, practice, and simulated situations. That being said, every client is different so each engagement is customized to set the client up for the most success.

My clients range from people who are just getting started with the craft to people know the ins and outs of the media but want to take their performance to a new level, to businesses and individuals who want to maximize their marketing plan by creating corporate videos. I can take them from start to finish on that project. I’ve also worked with politicians who want to be prepared in all situations especially any questions that the media or an audience may have for them.

I am proud of the fact that I’ve thought about starting this business for years and that I’ve finally done it. I am proud of the fact that I work with my client’s to express themselves AUTHENTICALLY, intelligently, and with confidence.

I have covered sports locally, nationally, and internationally. I have conducted some of the trickiest interviews LIVE with powerful subjects. I know what it’s like to make mistakes on live television and recover from them. I have various tips and insights about the camera, what it does to people, and how to overcome fear/nerves because I had to find my way out similar situations my entire career. Good, concise writing for video/television is crucial and it takes practice. I’m an award winner, including an Emmy. I help my clients!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was lucky to have a childhood full of love, laughter, family and sports. My brothers and I grew up in a cul- de- sac so most of my holidays were big neighborhood and family (brothers and cousins) football or basketball games. I loved playing sports in high school. I loved, in particular, my softball team. We all had different backgrounds but had each other’s back and laughed a lot. They were some of the best athletes I’d ever seen.

I met John Madden when I was 12. He was sitting in his limo and signed his autograph on a piece of paper for me. I still remember the tennis shoes I was wearing (KSWISS) That stamped my loyalty as a Raider fan that I was already born with.
