Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Lim.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2008 I dropped out of fashion school. I had extra paint to mess around with from a Color Theory class I had taken. From there I began to experiment in developing my own style without having any plans to one day show my work. I had always liked art growing up and I would usually try to recreate something as is. But this time I really just wanted to “go with the flow” and go from there. A lot of my inspirations came from watching 90’s cartoons, odd shapes and colors, you know all that out of the box stuff. But because of all that, it was easy for me to let my imagination run wild and be playful with colors. It helped me to develop my creativity and my own style.
Then I got introduced to artists who were active in the art community and from there everything unfolded the way it needed to so I can get to where I am today. I am grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way and for all the people I have met through this journey! The art community is constantly growing and it’s a beautiful thing!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t really been a smooth road. I don’t think anything in life is a smooth road! That’d make everything too easy. But some struggles I’ve faced has just been within myself. The fear of my art not being “good enough” or I compare myself to others. Reality is, not everyone is going to like my art, but I like my art and that’s all that matters and whoever likes it, will like it and whoever doesn’t, doesn’t, and that’s okay! It’s mainly my inner demons getting in the way, I just have to remind myself sometimes to do me, do what I want and create what I want. Do what makes me happy. No one is standing in the way but yourself you know?
Tell us more about your art.
I am a visual artist and I am a visual artist and I’m known for my use of bold, vibrant colors and my characters. I usually paint on canvas, but lately, I’ve been making a lot of fun earrings! I am currently working on an online store to sell earrings, prints and canvases, etc. But for now, all art and earrings are for sale on my Instagram @k_limonade.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success would be whatever makes you feel good and feel accomplished. We all have different versions of success. But the thing with success is that it’s always changing. I’m always looking for what’s next after I’ve accomplished something. I would say that as long as I am open to growth and constantly evolving, that’s success right there. A better version of myself each time.
