Meet Kayla Libby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Libby.

Kayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In my eyes, photography is simply an opportunity to express without a need to impress. At first, my purpose for using a camera was purely to capture moments that made me happy and feel loved. When I was just 15 years old, my lack of self love and happiness eventually lead to severe self hate. Through my experiences, I learned it can take deep struggles within yourself to have real gratitude for better times. With no intention of becoming a photographer, I began to take pictures of anything I wanted to look back on with a genuine smile. Now in 2019, I am currently 21 years old and recently became a full time lifestyle, surf and wedding photographer! Thanks to consistency and support from family and friends, I now have a career working with like minded creatives capturing moments that myself and others can enjoy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When pursuing any type of creative career there is always self doubt. Self doubt has persistently challenged me in ways that I was not always prepared for. Having not gone to school, I have heavily relied on experience and dedication. With that, my early photography was not something I always wanted to share.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a lifestyle, surf and wedding photography. Currently working with small and startup companies to help create media that produces their individualized message. With my work, I strive to create a warm and nostalgic feeling using film, digital and underwater photography. It is such an amazing dynamic when you finalize a portfolio working with such inspiring owners.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories have always been at the beach. The best days were getting down and dirty in the sand and playing in the waves. Although we weren’t there every day, each visit left such a warming impression. Now working at the same beaches where I grew up, that nostalgic feeling is what inspires me.
