Meet KC Deane of Juneshine in Cardiff By The Sea

Today we’d like to introduce you to KC Deane.

Thanks for sharing your story with us KC. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started skiing at the age of three years old in the mountains of north Idaho. My parents had me in the snow my whole life which was the reason I wanted to become a professional skier. After moving to Tahoe and skiing there for a few years, I eventually made a name for myself and now traveled all winter traveling as a professional skier.

During that time as well I went to a major bike contest in Utah called Red Bull Rampage in the fall of 2012. I was so inspired by that I decided to start biking with the goal in mind to become a pro mountain biker as well. I mean for me it seemed pretty logical haha, bike half the year and ski half the year.

After two years of riding, I got an invite to that same contest and went as an athlete in 2014 to Red Bull Rampage. Six years later now, I split the year between mountain biking and skiing which has been incredible to be a professional in both sports year around.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hahaha, yeah in a way I guess it has in some ways… Then again, I wouldn’t say it was too smooth. I have gone through a lot of injuries from breaking my neck, back, my right leg twice, feet, hands, clavicle, ribs twice, torn ligaments, collapsed lung, bruised Aorta/heart, etc.

The injuries as long as you can overcome them seem to be a part of things even though it’s maybe painful at the time, it fades and seems a distant memory after a while. So yeah I mean when I look back at all the hard work and countless hours spent skiing and riding over my life I wouldn’t say it was easy, but just a long process that I never gave up on and thankfully things have worked out.

And I wouldn’t change anything, to be honest. Even some of the injuries as hard as they were like being in a neck brace for five months I learned a lot from that. Both not listening to myself and being too confident which led me to that injury, and how to recover from that taught me a lot as well.

Please tell us about Juneshine.
Well, most recently I just joined on with Juneshine which is out of San Diego. The company has brought in a few different athletes such as myself, Albee Layer, Sage Kotsenburg and others which we are now part owners. Juneshine is a hard kombucha which is 6% alcohol Kombucha that is made purely from the fermentation process.

I think what separates Juneshine from other brands is being the only company now brewing hard kombucha without adding alcohol. And if feels great to see what has been built in just a short amount of time with the brewery in San Diego, and just the overall response people have had is amazing.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That is almost hard to say… I would probably say there were a few powder runs where I grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho with my Dad and brother that are really memorable.

Deep and untracked when I was about 10 or 11 years old when I finally got to the point I could rip down and felt like I was going fast and could jump off cliffs.
