Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley DeHaan.
Kelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In high school, I started working in a flower shop at 16 thinking it would be a fun job to have through school. Working at the same shop for five years in a family type atmosphere I learned so much, eventually designing.
I moved on to another shop for the next ten years. Working there I learned a lot about the wedding industry and so many different types of design and met so many people in the industry that inspired me to always learn more. Eventually, my brother in law bought a shop that I ran for the next seven years, I was able to meet so many new vendors and clients that trusted in me and really let me dive in with all creative freedom on so many projects. It was an amazing experience!
In 2012, I moved to the Temecula area as my family grew and continued to freelance during this time. Creating events, weddings, moments is what I love, seeing the happiness of my clients is so rewarding. Having them trust in me and letting me “color outside the lines” to make their events is what I love. A little creative freedom from me is what typically sets your event from all others.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a self-taught designer I am blessed, I have been given a gift. Working with incredible people that I am proud to call extended family and close friends has definitely helped guide me to where I am today. In 2012, leaving to come to a whole new city to grow my family was a scary risk, I had a fiance, and a daughter and everything looked great ahead.
Two kids, later I found myself a single mom to three amazing girls and learned that I am going to show them how strong I could be… as a very good friend said to me many of times, “you have to pull your ponytail high and just keep going”! And that is what I did! I now have so many great new vendor friends and new clients. I just keep pulling that ponytail high and meet more every day! I have three incredible girls that are my everything!
Anyone who meets me will more than likely hear about my girls, if not meet them! They are growing up around the industry, and I would love to see one of them find what is great about it like I did! I am addicted to Diet Coke and get one every morning to get my day going, it is my coffee! I love live music and wine tasting, Hiking, and camping. Meeting new people and learning anything about the business!

The name “A Flower Chick” came about many years ago while my cousin was setting up my email and I couldn’t think of an email address. He finally put in A Flower Chick and said that suited me! From there it is history, I was always called A Flower Chick! As I really love to do all types of designs, my true passion is weddings. I love so much that all brides have their own vision and I love to take that and bring it to life.
Brides will come to me and show me a few photos of what they like, and I tell them “lets put a little tweak on this, so it’s your own look.” They love that! Weddings should not all look the same, whether color combination or the style I say make it your own! I am a fanatic to details and mechanics, I want my work to stand out!
In all my years, I must say I am most proud of all the publication features I have been in and all of the wonderful people I have met along the way.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I have done quite a few events in the area, I do feel it is a good place for wedding specialists. There are so many venues available with so many different looks. The sky is the limit.
