Meet Kellie McCormick of McCormick & Wright in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie McCormick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to San Diego to go to design school. I met my mentor and former business partner when he was my instructor in college. I started working at the firm and things grew from there. It has been an amazing process of learning, growing, and building a business that is a true passion for me and all our team members.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a good road. Not too bumpy and not always smooth. Challenges along the way make us stronger and we learn from them – it makes us better at what we do. I’m lucky to have a great team with likeminded views and work ethics.

Please tell us about McCormick & Wright.
McCormick & Wright is a talented team of interior designers dedicated to the collaborative experience of creating innovative and personal spaces for all our clients. We pride ourselves on developing unique interiors with thoughtful decisions that reflect our client’s personality and style.

We have a long history in the San Diego interior design world and have had the pleasure of working with many great architectural firms and construction companies along the way. Established in 1984 by Jan Bast, the firm grew and Robert Wright and Jan Bast joined together. I personally joined the team in the late 1990’s and 5 years ago became partners with Robert and owner of the firm. I had the pleasure to work and learn from them both over the years. Watching them work together as partners and friends were priceless and I am very thankful for the experiences we shared.

We are a dedicated and caring group of designers who are passionate about design and who continue to grow and learn through personal and professional experiences.

Jason, Kate, Gabrielle, Jared, Alex, Darren, and myself are great group and team.

We are – Passionate. Social. Flexible. Responsible. Caring.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite place, as a child (and still is), is a little cabin my family has up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. One summer my mother and I went up for the week with my grandparents while my dad was at home working. His plan was to come up on the weekend with our dog Robinson. On Friday afternoon, a helicopter kept flying over the cabin – circling and circling. My grandfather says “I bet that’s your dad”. So, he and I jump on his mini Honda motorcycle he kept at the cabin and headed down the hill. As we winded around the bends, the helicopter followed. We followed it to the water inlet at the lake where the Ranger Station was. The helicopter landed, the door popped open – and sure enough – out came my dad, our golden lab, Robinson, and a giant roll of astroturf! Now, the Ranger was not happy – and you could never to that now. While this is not a design related memory – my takeaway – be creative and if you problem solve you can always find a way to overcome a hurdle (like getting a giant roll of astroturf and a dog up the mountain…).
