Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Smith.
Kelsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Like a lot of other photographers, my journey started with the birth of my first child, Daniel. I was obsessed with all of the little details and I was so worried I wasn’t going to remember every little thing. I started to document everything and when I would look back on those first images, my heart would flood with gratitude. I started to see how important family photography was and realized that we just don’t get a second chance to capture this season of life. We had just moved to San Diego from Carlsbad and for the first time in my life, I wasn’t working outside of our home. My husband encouraged me (and continually supported me) through opening my own business. That was 6 years ago and I am so grateful that photography is part of my daily life.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing good comes easy, right? I started my business with the birth of my first babe six years ago and am now pregnant with my 4th. I’m a mom first, always. Being both a business owner and mom can be overwhelming, especially in the beginning when the learning curve (for both) is high. I’ve had to learn to balance both parenthood with business ownership and find a way to still enjoy it all. It hasn’t always been easy but it has always been worth it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kelsey Smith Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in family photography, mostly families with young children. I also love to photograph maternity and in-home lifestyle newborn sessions. This is my season of life too and I know how hard it can be sometimes. I just want to make sure I show how beautiful it is too. These moments are gone too soon, blink-of-an-eye quick. I want to show my clients what they can’t see. To show them all the beauty in all the little details. To show them the forest for the trees. Although this time in our lives can be challenging, it is without a doubt the most beautiful and rewarding.
I believe family photography is important work, that families mostly exist in these in-between moments of imperfection and love. This is where I want to capture my families. The silly smiles, the mischievous looks between siblings, the huge hugs. This is exactly the story I tell when I photograph my clients. I want to show them the light their beautiful family shines.
As a company, I am truly proud of this business I have built, the beautiful clients that trust me year after year with their most precious memories, and the ability to be both mom and business owner and provide for my family. I love working with the families I work with and am beyond grateful to see them grow each and every year.
I believe the experience I offer my families sets me apart. I don’t offer typical, boring, smile-at-the-camera sessions. I just don’t believe that is where families truly exist. Instead, I want my sessions to be fun, intimate, and authentic and I want the images we produce together to be different from anything they’ve ever experienced with other photographers. I adore my families, I love watching these kids grow, and I am so grateful to be able to offer what I do.
