Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Broda.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kendall. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up not too far away in Long Beach, then moved to Boulder, Colorado for college. I left the University of Colorado at Boulder with many amazing memories and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Mathematics (just for fun!) as well as a Master of Science in Financial Accounting. I moved to San Diego to start my career working with a Fortune 500 company working in an accounting department while sitting for my CPA license. I realized that the corporate life was not for me and “retired” and started the next chapter of my life working at a tax preparation company in North Park where I had a ton of fun working late nights during tax season and enjoying the not-busy-season traveling the world. After a couple of years, I decided to start a boutique concierge CPA firm in North County focusing on creating customized, proactive tax strategies for business owners – mostly in the creative industry. That is what I have been doing ever since and I truly love it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took me about a year and a half to go against everyone’s advice and leave my very stable very good job in the corporate world to go out on my own. I wish that I had realized sooner that the corporate life was not for me. I am still thankful for the people I met and everything I learned while I was there and I wouldn’t take that experience back.
Please tell us about Taxes by the Sea.
I started Taxes by the Sea to give business owners more time and confidence to do what they love instead of worrying about how to navigate the IRS and state tax agencies and more importantly, paying too much in tax. I thrive on working with business owners in the creative industry and taking the complex area of tax and making it simple for my clients to understand and make business decisions. I love being the one to bring a unique and fresh approach to our clients so they can take advantage of the money they save in taxes and use towards anything they want whether that is reinvesting in their business, going on a surf trip, paying off their mortgage, saving for retirement, or buying their dream vacation home in the mountains!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel lucky to have found a profession that I can help people achieve their goals and at the same time, enjoy what I am doing. I feel lucky that I am a financial person but surrounded by a creative community and that I can bridge that gap. I feel lucky that I am happy in my profession and in my life!
