Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Wooten, Josh Hughes, Sam Wells and Royce Eaton.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Skerfunk all went to the same high school, but only half were friends with each other. Sam and Royce had their own friends, Josh and Kenny had theirs. Josh and Sam had both been pushing to start bands with their own groups of friends before they met. By luck, they met Freshman year of college. After being friends and jamming together and writing songs for a couple of years, they decided to seek help from their friends Royce and Tom to complete their lineup. The group started playing shows in San Diego and were immediately met with love. Tom, singer, unfortunately, had other commitments he had to attend, so the group reached out to their friend Kenny to fill in as singer. He made the role into his own, and together, the group has quickly solidified itself into the San Diego music scene.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been a few times where we’ve struggled. Like we mentioned, our original singer had to leave kind of early on in the band around April of last year, so that put us in a rough spot until we got Kenny. We also like to get naked when we play (because who wouldn’t) and we’ve had some people complain about that, even got taken off a show because of it. We got all of that resolved though. Everyone likes seeing our Butts 🙂
We’d love to hear more about your band.
We are a psychedelic funk-punk band. That in itself just puts us apart from a lot of the groups we play without in San Diego. And honestly, it’s great because that really works to our advantage. We just really love being different. It’s something that a lot of people are afraid to be. I think that’s a big message we try to portray in our music and our live performances. The weirder we are, the better. (at least in our heads) A huge thing we do that we’re known for now is getting naked when we play (in the right setting).
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego absolutely has some of the most interesting people we’ve met. There is a large art and music community in San Diego that’s filled with the craziest and coolest people. Oh and all the beaches are the best.
Only thing we dislike is the 15 freeway.
