Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Melim.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Other artists inspire me. So, I try to make work that, hopefully, inspires others to go out and make art of their own. I have a speech that I put on every post of mine, I call the speech “Art is Everywhere.” The point to it is that, I know what it’s like to be a new photographer and I know it can get discouraging at times, seeing other work that is so much better than your own. I still see so much work that’s better than mine. But it’s common for a photographer to say, “Oh, well, I can’t make anything that good because my camera is a piece of junk.” But the point of “Art is Everywhere” is to encourage those photographers/artists. A reminder to not only them, but to myself, that it’s not about what gear you have… it’s about how you use it. With creativity, some of the best art can be made with some of the worst equipment.
Please tell us about your art.
I like to take thought-provoking photos that get better at every viewing. Mainly the reason I keep going with my craft is to encourage other artists. Because I know how easy it is to just give up and not create anymore. There are times, where any given artist feels like giving up and that doesn’t feel good. When people give up their art, they could be denying us the most epic piece of humanity we may have ever seen. Every artist has the potential to make a difference in someone’s life. And while I hope to make something that inspires someone that heavily; my main goal is just to be a contributing member to the art society and maybe give just a bit of encouragement that another artist may have needed to keep it going.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think the best way to support other artists is to collaborate with them, keep the conversation going, but more importantly, just have fun. The bottom line is: just go shoot. Art won’t make itself.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on Instagram (@melimphoto). What I post on Instagram is more of a portfolio of work and I just keep it going mainly for myself. I post something new daily; which gets difficult, but I like the challenge. You can support my work by hiring me! You can contact me either through Instagram or you can also find my contact info on my website: melimphoto.com
