Meet Keya Tama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keya Tama.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1997. My parents were teenagers at the time. My mom had just started her art career and my dad was a tattoo artists apprentice. I was surrounded by art and creative culture from the time I was born. I started drawing as soon as I could, from the age of ten I started taking it more seriously. At 12 I had my first show and released a graphic novel. I started traveling with my mom as she did street art, painting alongside her at many of the events. More recently, I’ve immigrated to the US where I have now had two solo shows, the most recent being at cartoon network studios where I painted a mural in 2017.

Please tell us about your art.
Most recently my art has been simplified and I’ve put focus on saying more and using less. Representing South Africa in LA, without over explanation. My work is getting progressively more personal as I get older and I have been making long-form animation and working with Peruvian and South African weavers/embroiderers. I also use canvas, wood and do street art.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
If you’re in school, don’t be under the illusion that there’s some magical force which will change everything once you leave. Take it seriously and use all your time as well as you can. Work hard to create things that mean something to you. I can’t give advice generally in terms of style but I think making an effort to be around other artists who have similar ideas about the world will give you energy and connect the dots. Do as much as you can for exposure, really focus and be humble.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see my work on my Instagram @keyatama or my website keyatama.com. On the 8th Feb, I will be releasing to the public the work from my latest show at Cartoon Network Studios.
