Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim DeGiulio.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the mortgage world as a temp receptionist with a wholesale lender in early 2001. I quickly taught myself the mortgage business and worked my way up to an underwriting position within a couple of years. In 2007, during the mortgage meltdown, I lost my job, got married, and became pregnant with twins. I stayed home with my children for six years, and during that time, I also left the abusive drug-addict I was married to. When my girls started Kindergarten, I went back to work as a Compliance Analyst for a bank, working my way up to Senior Compliance Analyst in just a few short months. When my partner and I moved the family from Colorado to California in 2015, I decided that being stuck in an office in sunny San Diego was not my ideal situation, so I took the Mortgage Loan Originator test and moved into sales. My partner and I decided we make a better team than to each originate loans separately and Team Southern Mortgages was created.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. The biggest struggle has been building a mortgage business in California. With over twenty-years in Denver, CO, we had a solid past customer base. Building in California has been slow going. I am glad I kept my Colorado license because those relationships have sustained me through the rough times. It took a good two years before people in this market trusted us enough to think about doing business with us. Consistency has been vital in building those relationships.
Please tell us about your business.
I believe our mission statement says it all. Our mission is to engage with you, the members of our community, educate you on all of your available mortgage options, empowering you to make informed mortgage decisions for you and your family. I specialize in helping people understand the mortgage process and what is best for their situation, and that is what sets me apart from other Mortgage Loan Officers. My team will take the extra hour or two to make a spreadsheet and figure out if it makes sense to roll your car loan into your mortgage, or any other number of situations.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I’m not sure I would do anything differently. Life is about learning and I have learned something at every turn.
