Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Millwood.
Chef Mark met Miss Kim in Vail Colorado. They both were part of an opening team for the Arrabelle, a new luxury destination hotel for Rock Resorts. Chef Mark wooed Miss Kim with his undeniable charm and they married in Maui in 2011. Chef Mark had always said he wanted his own restaurant. Knowing how hard it is to run a restaurant, Kim said: “You’re Crazy, but I’m up for the challenge.” The two put their heads together and created what is now That Boy Good!
Chef Mark is a lifer in the kitchen. He got his first job in the kitchen at the ripe old age of 13 and he never looked back. Mark has held positions in some of the most prestigious restaurants, casinos, and resorts in America. With names like The Ritz Carlton, Caesars Palace, J.W. Marriott, The Beau Rivage, and Rock Resorts. It’s no wonder his resume reads like a who’s who of the culinary world. Chef credits his mother (Ms. Lequita) for his passion for cooking and his undying love for southern comfort food. He say’s that, “I am blessed to have been raised by a momma that kept an old coffee can full of bacon fat on the stove to cook with”.
If Chef is the talent, then there is no doubt that Miss Kim is the brains. She is definitely the better half of this operation. Miss Kim has spent over twenty years in the hospitality business. She has worked every position imaginable and has done it in some of America’s most iconic settings. From the Denali range of Alaska to the waters of Lake Powell to the Rocky Mountains. Kim has been on a lifelong adventure in the food and beverage business and has loved every minute.
Miss Kim and Chef are so excited to be in Oceanside and are proudly committed to supporting the Military and local charities. Miss Kim’s son Victor was born in Oceanside in 2001. Since that time, she has watched Oceanside transform into a thriving beach community. She introduced Mark to Oceanside in 2011 where he instantly fell in love and knew this was a place he could call home. They have been proud owners of That Boy Good since 2012.
They just opened their second restaurant in 2017. That Boy Good is now able to cater for 1500 of your closest friends and family.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We found our first location much earlier than anticipated. This meant are funds were very limited. Our very first payroll was put on our credit cards.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the That Boy Good and Miss Kim’s by That Boy Good story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a juke joint in the heart of downtown Oceanside. We specialize in southern cooking. Everything is smoked and made from scratch daily at our newest spot just up the street from Miss Kim’s.
When you enter the wooden screen doors you will hear the blues playing in the background and our staff will welcome you with a big hello. With our specialty drink menu and the Best BBQ West of the Mississippi, you are bound to have a great experience at Miss Kim’s.
Our second location – That Boy Good is attached to a brewery (Northern Pine Brewing). This location is a walk up counter that eat in one of Oceanside’s newest breweries. This location is allowing us to do a lot more catering. We can now cater for over 100 people as before we could barely cater for 200.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We believe in hard work and integrity. With these two things, anything is possible.
