Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimber Aubin.
Kimber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Smart Kids Tees was born in 2019. Each tee is hand-drawn and edited. The idea came from my children or at least was inspired by them. Having a love of art from a very early age, I pursued that passion from my late teens through my 20’s. Life catches up to youth, and the responsibilities of marriage and children put art on the back burner. One seemingly random week, with a rare day off, I decided to join my children in their weekly art class. I paid for one class and sat at a child’s size easel while a very enthusiastic 20 something made me draw basic shapes. She made me go back to the beginning and reminded me to use my whole arm while drawing.
I complied and within that hour and fifteen minute class, I was taken back to a place I hadn’t visited in a long time. It was space in my own head of peace, creativity and clam that had been buried with the pressures of adulthood. As often as I could, I took that art class with my kids. I slowly started to see art from a whole new point of view. Not the angsty struggle of early adulthood, but the quiet peace of a post 40’s mother. Colors, form, shape, shadows, and hues, all seen from a new perspective. And so… Smart Kids Tees was born and is dedicated to my children, who helped their mother rediscover art all over again.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Although having an extensive background in fine art, I knew very little about digital art and even less about marketing and advertising. I decided to tackle Abobe Illustrator. After many YouTube tutorials, Skillshare practice classes and tears of frustration, I managed to learn a basic digital skillset.
I then found the Procreate app and developed a seamless way of starting with a paintbrush and canvas, fine-tuning in Procreate and finally editing with Adobe. Marketing and Advertising are still a work in progress and will develop more with time.
Please tell us about Smart Kids Tees.
Children want to express and explore their passions just as much as adults. Smart Kids Tees gives them a way to do just that. We specialize in educational, artistic tees for kids. We also make adult sizes. My children love it when they can wear a matching tee with mom or dad. I also love that we have so many different cuts of tees. We offer unisex fit tees in all our designs for kids and adults.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do feel like San Diego is a good place for a business like mine. It is so diverse, with so many opportunities to explore different cultures. We are looking into expanding our tees into other languages.
