Meet Kimberly Kulak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Kulak.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well, I’m a bit of a sentimentalist. I always have been and always will be. Through good and bad, through ups and downs, I’m a firm believer of the whole You being a product of everything that came before your today’s; the building and the tearing-aparts of your every experience bring you to where you are today. With that, I’ve always wanted to preserve a little bit of the “now” moments. I used to write a lot, and capturing photos just came naturally when the opportunity came. In a defining moment in college, I actually destroyed all of my documentary journals in an attempt to start fresh in my life journey. That didn’t work. All of my befores are still with me now. When I had my first baby boy, I didn’t want any of his nows to go uncaptured and forgotten. I picked up a DSLR and really never put it down. I wasn’t looking for “clients” or “customers” or even a new career: my life’s work came to me. For that, I will always be grateful. In my unending search for purpose and what I wanted to do next, I’m certain I would not have found it in a classroom, or in interviews, or from looking under rocks. It came to me, and I embraced it. People asked for it and shared what I could do. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was me. My work. My art. My oldest son is now 7.5 years old, I welcomed my second little darling 1.5 years ago, and this journey continues for me. Kimberly Kulak Photography just celebrated six years in September. Blood, sweat, and tears is an understatement, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for any other path. I love what I do, and I’m beyond blessed for the opportunities and the best people in the community and in my life who support me.

Please tell us about your art.
Without any fluff, I’m a photographer. My job is to capture the now-moments in people’s lives. I’m primarily a wedding and portrait photographer, but I also do newborn photography, party coverage, boudoir sessions, product work, and I volunteer with my son’s school and sports teams to capture those moments too. There really isn’t a limit, and I’m always up for trying new things. I love traveling and capturing everything I can along the way. And let’s be honest, my phone is a great source for everyday use and social media posts too haha. I guess what I want out of it all is for moments to be captured and eternalized. There’s something special about the feelings a photograph can bring up. It isn’t just about that one day, but about that point in your life. What was happening behind the scenes and what was happening in the days and months before and after that image was captured? When you show those photos to your grandbabies, what will they see? What stories do you have to share with them about those times? When you and the love-of-your-life look back at photos from the beginning days, can you still feel those butterflies that you felt for one another? Real life stuff in a still shot.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
We live in a fast-paced world with technology advancing every passing minute, so yes, I do think the role of artists has changed. The way information is shared is so vast now. You could hire a photographer in the states to go shoot a wedding in Italy, so literally, we are competing with and sharing experiences with people from all over the world. Facebook and Instagram have us connected with people from all over with just a click of the mouse or swipe on a phone. It’s crazy how fast word travels and how important it is to be relevant. I mean, one mistake or one bad word of mouth could spread like wildfire; on the flip side, one amazing image and your name is known EVERYWHERE! Locally, nationally, or internationally, I’m just trying hard to be honest with who I am because that’s all I can be. You can’t please everyone, but hopefully, who you are is enough.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
