Meet Kimberly Skeen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Skeen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been drawn to photography, but it was my first job out of college as a zookeeper that got me started. I would borrow my roommates SLR and photograph the animals every chance I got. I’m so grateful for those images today as that was such an amazing time of my life. Like most family photographers, it was having kids of my own that lead to my first real camera purchase. Once my first son was born I dove into educating myself in photography through a combination of online forums, classes, and the guidance of other local photographers.

Please tell us about your art.
I photograph families and kids! I try to capture the unique dynamic of each family so when they look back at their photos it transports them back to that moment in time. I think photography is a very important gift, so I also donate my time to photograph military homecomings and adoptable dogs. My goal is to capture a feeling from that moment, that is what I hope people take from my photos.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Photography is not all about having the latest equipment. Start out simple as you learn. I started out with a used full frame camera that was five years old – it is still my favorite camera! I would also suggest meeting up with other photographers to shoot – it can help you see things in a different way and apply it to your own style.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be viewed on my website and social media under Kimberly Skeen Photography. I love to interact with people via my social media platforms and have formed great relationships with clients and other photographers via this medium.
