Today we’d like to introduce you to Korin Chapman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Art has always been a part of my life, ever since I was a young kid, looking up to my grandparents who are both working artists. Still, I never thought it would be a realistic career path for myself, so instead I focused on my other passion and pursued sports. I trained and competed in Pole Vaulting for eight years through high school and college. I attended SDSU after being recruited to their Pole Vault team and studied Painting and Print Making during my time there.
Unfortunately, an injury forced me to leave the team and re-evaluate what I wanted to do with my life. I got a 9-5 to pay the bills and started practicing my art again. Over the last couple years my art has changed significantly while I have experimented and learned more about myself and the mediums I enjoy working with. Fast forward to today, I am now working as an Artist full time and am a part-time yoga teacher as well. I am very excited about my path and with what’s to come.
Please tell us about your art.
I first considered myself a resin painter. However, now I don’t consider myself so much a painter, but instead a mixed media sculptor. I have always loved resin pouring, but I didn’t want to become just another resin artist or create pieces others would look at and think, “I know how she did that” or “anyone could make that.” With this in mind, I took the skills my grandmother taught me about clay sculpting and found a way to incorporate it into my own art and process.
My most recent focus and series has been in making realistic Aerial paintings by hand carving rocks/landforms and then pouring many layers of tinted resin. The layers of resin create amazing depth in the pieces and it really makes you feel like you are floating up in the air looking down into the mysterious blues of the ocean and its meeting point with dry land.
I want to inspire people with my art, creating a feeling similar to when you find yourself upon a beautiful vista. Everything that I make is influenced by the natural wonders that surround us. When you look into one of my pieces, I want to create a sense of wonder, intrigue, and desire to look further into the details. I’ve heard many times that when someone first see my work from a distance, they think “Oh another drone photographer”, but then they get a little closer and realize, no it’s not a photo, “but what is it and how did you do that?!” Watching someone discover one of my pieces and slowly move in closer and closer with a childlike curiosity, to the point they are nose to nose with one of my cliffs, is what gets me excited and inspired to create.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I believe that success as an artist isn’t determined by monetary benchmarks or public recognition. Rather, it’s something much more personal and internal, measured by the enjoyment of the time spent creating. This is compounded by the same joy and excitement found in the people it is shared with.
