Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Montez.
Kristen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was driven to attend law school because of healthcare access issues plaguing unemployed individuals I counseled. Since the inception of my legal career, my focus has been health law to help foster solutions to those healthcare access issues.
After law school, I took the traditional route and worked for a medical malpractice defense law firm. Wanting to be more future focused in my practice, I transitioned to in-house legal counsel to several San Diego-based healthcare companies.
Drawing from these experiences, I found my passion is innovative healthcare solutions on a global level. When you find your passion, things tend to organically fall into place. I branched out on my own and founded “The Global Healthcare Attorney” now “The Global Healthcare Law Group”. The firm is dedicated to providing legal assistance to start-up, early stage and established companies that offer healthcare solutions on a local and global level. Every day is exciting and cannot be planned for. I have created an amazing niche and my work does not feel like work.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I experienced pay-cuts and sudden layoffs. But each moment of struggle was an opportunity to reassess and learn what was truly important to me. In hindsight, each “setback” was actually a moment to steer my career in the right direction.
The Global Healthcare Law Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My practice provides ongoing legal counsel to innovative healthcare companies, whether start-up or established. I focus on compliance, transactions and risk assessment and mitigation. The other aspect of my practice is international assisted reproductive technology law (surrogacy, egg and sperm donation, etc.). Both areas are unique and rewarding in their own right.
I am known for not scaring clients into obtaining legal services. Instead of instilling fear, I strive for all my clients to feel empowered through legal knowledge. This approach sets me apart.
I am most proud of the innovative niche I have created. Our team is phenomenal and truly passionate about what they do.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There is not just one proud moment. I beam when a healthcare provider approaches me after a seminar and shares s/he feels more focused and empowered after my presentation. Or Intended Fathers in Belgium text me through WhatsApp that they are finally pregnant!! Or working on a surrogate contract review call at 8:00 pm with my clients living in China. My clients, me, the translator and the case manager are all on the phone together. It is amazing that collectively, we bridge cultural and language barriers and build a journey together. When a healthcare company shares their successes with me–i.e. the company receives a prestigious accolade or because of their innovation (i.e. non-genomic testing to analyze efficacy of certain cancer treatments) has saved lives.
Or when a member of the Global Healthcare Law Group team just shares how much they appreciate the difference we are making together. Or when I am able to attend my son’s violin recitals and lessons during the day because of my thriving business model. I am able to be there for my son. My career is awesome and truly a gift.
