Meet Kyle Corbett of Seas Lyfe and Reduce Impact in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Corbett.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Seas LYFE, Life You Find Exploring, was born many years ago as just a dream. One can even say that it’s a dream shared by many of those who have given their soul to the ocean and a life on the seas. 7 years ago, I bought my first boat after learning sailing during college. I lived and worked on this yacht while learning from older generations of sailors to restore her to her former glory.

Reduce Impact was born of my passion for education and ocean conservation. I spent a total of seven years completing a 4-year degree in social psychology. I worked over 20 different jobs in college to fund my ability to take off a semester at a time. I left the U.S. to see what else was out there backpacking across different countries with a surfboard bag. I honestly believe that I have come to learn more from people and of different countries and their culture than I ever could have in a classroom. I also was exposed to the effect of careless human behavior.

I have a very deep-rooted passion for the ocean, how it calls to me and commands my soul. That may sound silly, but I honestly feel like I am supposed to be near the sea, on it, or in it – whenever possible. When I don’t surf, I’m not in a good mood. When I do Paddle out I feel connected to life, I feel happier, and I feel like I’m in the right place in life. Sailing has always been a Passion of mine. I love the idea that a person can travel the world using the wind’s power. The sound of the water along the hull while sailing a boat in the ocean is mesmerizing. Sailing to uncrowded waves is the ultimate dream.

Has it been a smooth road?
We started to Reduce Impact and Seas Lyfe on a hope and a prayer. I never took a business loan and relied solely on our own funds and knowledge about what we were doing. We asked questions and learned from everyone we could. I’ve been able to cultivate a team who push themselves to grow to meet each challenge we face. Every member of our team shares this deep passion for the ocean and raising awareness about human devastation caused by careless behavior.

This first year has been a rocky start and we did not get a lot of traction at first. We were able to host our brand launch party in March with a minimal amount of hiccups, and now we are raising awareness weekly at the Ocean Beach Farmers Market as well as the Artisan Market in the Gaslamp District. Additionally, our office team has been dedicated to providing proper APA Cited papers for ReduceImpact.org which is our educational platform. Our team has overcome many obstacles in order to provide the most accurate and current research in a way that everyone can use.

There has also been no shortage of work for our crew who work and live aboard our research vessel. During one of our first voyages, we ran into several challenges including a non-working generator while we navigated back from the Channel Islands. Fortunately, the crew of Seas Lyfe is a wealth of resource and knowledge, a group of truly apt sailors. who are undaunted by life at sea.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Seas Lyfe and Reduce Impact story. Tell us more about the business.
Seas Lyfe isn’t just about the journey of a lifetime, it’s a platform for education and connection. We make a living on the water, we spend our time on the water, we have fun on the water, eat local species out of our fisheries, and most of us actually live on the water. Seas Lyfe and Reduce Impact specialize in bringing awareness to a global community. Our work at Reduce Impact is geared towards educating the public through scientific research while contributing to the global body of data, while Seas Lyfe is our platform for global outreach.

We are proud to be going into remote fishing villages and ports across the globe in an initiative to inspire change through education and helping communities make changes by implementing more sustainable practices. We know that we couldn’t possibly rid the oceans of plastic alone; by generating awareness and building global partnerships we believe we can truly leave a better world for future generations.

While circumnavigating the seas our goal is to have guest scientists, researchers, and writers use our spotlight on global travel to raise awareness of ocean conservation. In many ways, Seas LYFE is the very human element behind why anyone loves the ocean at all, why anyone would want to sail it, save it, and use social media to inspire others.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next decade, we hope to see our global body of citizens rethink the consequence of our behaviors. At Seas Lyfe and Reduce Impact we believe that the level of awareness will only increase. The increase in awareness is the first step in implementing new industry standards and cultivating a political climate receptive to protecting our most precious resource.

We believe that the biggest change starts with educating those who will inherit the earth. If current consumption trends continue there will be more waste in the ocean than organic matter by 2050. We think the biggest shift will be present in personal consumption habits. We also believe that humans are amazing and capable of saving this big blue planet.
