Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Card.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lacey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was young, I was always doing my friend’s hair and makeup for fun. After high school, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with myself when my mom announced she had signed me up for an orientation at the beauty school. With a heavy sigh and a huge eye roll, I agreed to go, and by the time it was over, I was convinced that was where I needed to be. Moral of the story, sometimes moms really do know best, because 18 years later I am still doing hair and I still love it.
Being a hairstylist has been such a great career for me. I have worked all over, owned my own salon, traveled, and spent every day doing something creative. But most importantly, I have spent my life working to make people feel good about themselves, listening to their ups and downs, getting to know their lives and sending them out into the world with confidence.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every career comes with ups and downs. Dealing with crazy salon owners, impossible to please clients, and when working with chemicals, there is always a chance something can go very wrong. I feel I learned the most from starting, running and then eventually losing the salon I put my heart and soul into. I had a dream, and I worked very hard to make that dream a reality, but eventually, the simple fact that I had no real clue how to make a business thrive long term caught up with me.
At the time, I was heartbroken over the loss and failure, but eventually, I was able to see what my weaknesses were, what my strengths were, what I learned in the process and it all helped me grow as a businesswoman and a person. We don’t become great by succeeding at everything, we become great by making mistakes and learning from them.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a hair artist who specializes in natural-looking blondes, curly hair and up-dos. I am always proud of my ability to listen to people and do my best to give them exactly what they ask for, even if its not my personal style. I’m also a graphic design student, dog mom, cancer survivor, aspiring gardener, runner and nature lover.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I moved to San Diego from Seattle roughly two years ago for the sunshine and I love it! I enjoy being able to be outside more, spend time at the beautiful beaches, and I am also a big craft beer fan. The thing I like least, honestly, is watching the cute neighborhood I live in getting taken over by giant modern apartment complexes. It happened in Seattle and changed it from a city I loved and could live in comfortably, to a place that was unrecognizable and extremely overrun and overpriced. I am afraid that will happen to University Heights.
