Today we’d like to introduce you to Lane Sharman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a love of pioneering, exploring and inventing. Pioneering and activism are in my blood.
My great-great grandfather schooner to San Francisco in 1845 and settled in Los Angeles. My mom advocated for women’s rights in San Francisco in the 70s. My cousin leads Nature and Culture, a conservancy of native habitat in South America.
I have strengthened the pioneering mantle by founding the first water credit exchange in the State of California, the Borrego Water Exchange. This is the first water exchange to demonstrate how to create wealth through conservation of water.
As of October 2011, I championed community energy, co-founding the San Diego Energy District Foundation. The intensive focus on Solana Beach led to the first Community Energy Program within the region.
Today, I married the concern for water and energy and formed Transform Water and Power. I love to travel to France and Africa where colleagues, friends, family and surf nourish my love of creative forces of nature.
Has it been a smooth road?
In any road, there are failures. One of my favorite axioms is “Fail fast”. Another is “Perfection is the enemy of the good.” So, in dealing with failures, I’ve had to examine my weaknesses and find others to fill in those gaps.
Family tragedies, loss and estrangements have weighed on me. In reading the Dalai Lama, I am learning about the importance of compassion. This is helping me here.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Transform Water and Power story. Tell us more about the business.
Today, we are very excited about integrating new technologies into fresh water and clean air. Did you know that by far the largest river is in the atmosphere? And, there are all sorts of creative ways to convert saturated vapor into water. There are immense water bodies like the Salton Sea in need of fresh water restoration.
Transform Water and Power has a proposal to California for restoration not dependent on importing water from the Gulf of California. We propose to design and maintain large barges of Atmospheric Water Generators returning fresh water to the Sea while being captured from the air.
Transform can bring fresh water and clean energy to remote subdivisions and cannabis growers. Lastly, we stand for compassionate capitalism that recognizes the tremendous responsibility each corporation has to the community and the planet in which it operates.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The business of fresh water and clean power is about driving local solutions. This stands in opposition to the very large power plants and dams which create significant risks to the marketplace and the environment, especially when there are migrations or plant failures.
During the next 5-10 years, I expect to see many more Community Energy and Water Districts sprout up to claim some independence in the governance of the utility, owned by and for the people it serves.
