Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Dorsey.
Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“It all started when I began teaching kindergarten a few years back in the Midwest. A parent of a student knew I had a passion for baking and brought me The Bakerella Cake Pop Cook Book. From then on I was hooked! I started baking and decorating cake pops to match every holiday and classroom unit. It wasn’t until I started receiving lots of encouragement from my family and friends to make a business out of my newly found passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had it great ever since the beginning! People seem to love our pops! I baked out of my house for a year and then moved to a commercial kitchen downtown and now we have grown enough to support our very own retail shop. I opened the shop in August and we hit the ground running ever since!
Please tell us about The Cake Pop Shop.
The Cake Pop Shop specializes in creative and customizable cake pops, as well as many other desserts like cookies, cupcakes, brownies, macaroons, and cakes. We also offer a vegan and gluten-free dessert line that can be found in several restaurants and hotels such as Native Foods Cafe and the Hard Rock Hotel. We offer custom orders in which customers can pre-order on the website and then pick up from our store. We also offer full dessert displays and delivery/set up. These are very popular this wedding season!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Baking Christmas cookies was always a big event in my household growing up. My mom is a gourmet cook and took her cookie tins very seriously. It would be a large production of 20 different flavors and hundreds of each kind. We would spend an entire weekend baking cookie together each year and then divide them out into tons of cookie tins for all our neighbors, family, and friends! I hope to carry on this tradition with my own kids someday.
