Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Micallef.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
With a refreshingly positive attitude, I have an innate passion for interiors. Since graduating from San Diego State University, with a degree in Art and a focus in Interior Design, I had a successful career in a hospitality design firm in the Gaslamp District. For years I worked with clients in the restaurant and bar industry learning when proper balance is struck between vision, materials, budget and time.
Following an entrepreneurial impulse, I have translated my experience and skill with commercial design into a boutique firm specializing in residential design.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business was a new and an exciting experience. I would say, overall, I had few challenges after leaving the restaurant and bar industry. That is because I am doing something I love to do and have a passion for. My advice is to do what you love. Even then the work is hard for what you love.
The task of naming my business which reflected my creative side was important. Blue Poppy Design has many references to design meanings. I love the color blue, it reminds me of the ocean and our coastal living here in San Diego. The poppy is our California state flower and graces our hillsides in the springtime. There is also a rare blue poppy which grows in cooler climates. I love a colorful garden and a colorful home.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blue Poppy Design – what should we know?
I love homes and people stories. This is my source of inspiration for turning my client’s space from a vision into reality. I take time to listen to their needs so we can create a space that expresses who they are. Whether it’s a full kitchen or bathroom remodel or a refresh of a living room, it is important to reflect my client into their new space.
Working with clients to complete a remodel is very fulfilling. I am sensitive to budgets, meet with contractors, and draw up plans. I especially love tile design. I have the knowledge and skill to bring the correct materials, finishes and furnishings to each project.
I find many of my clients are working professionals or business owners themselves. They need help with the design process, resulting in a home that they can come home to that reflects their own personal style.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My goal is to provide concierge service to my clients based upon a productive and satisfying relationship. I value a job well done. I want to provide a pleasant working experience between myself and my clients; to create a beautiful home for them to enjoy.
