Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Newman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I began my journey in photography, I was 15 years old, and I shot self-portraiture and photos of friends on a Canon Rebel XTI. That was the time of Flickr, Deviantart, and Lookbook; all of which played a huge role to inspire me to continue pursuing photography. I was lucky enough to have friends who were always down to take pictures because they wanted epic pictures as much as I did! I would go home after shooting and spend way too much time experimenting with Photoshop to edit what I just shot. To pursue my love for photography, even more, I chose to study photography at Belmont University in Nashville. During this period I learned how to shoot on film and would literally spend hours in the darkroom developing all my photos by hand. For me, it was beneficial to go to school because I was able to focus solely on studying my craft while having mentors and peers to challenge me as an artist. Besides that, I participated in photography internships to expand my knowledge and network.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a fashion, lifestyle, and wedding photographer. My biggest hope for my work is to create timeless images that tell stories and capture moments in their purest form. I love the trust my clients give me with each photo shoot that enables us to make beautiful photos. Annie Leibovitz, Tim Walker, Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Cindy Sherman are huge inspirations of mine!
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Living in such a fast-paced world, I believe that it’s more important than ever to support your local artists and for artists to support one another.
