Meet Laurie Beltran of Modern Woodmen Of America

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Beltran.

Hi Laurie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The oldest story in the book. Abused little girl with no direction, no mentors to help. Joined the bad girls club in high school. (Lots of fights) Ditching and drinking) Married at 19, unfortunately, married an acholic and another abuser. Went into the military, and my life changed. I have never looked back!

I worked in a specialized field, Petroleum, as a Comptroller. Left Indio, Ca after 21 years and came to San Diego, my life took a nose dive in 2008 (Housing Crash), and I lost a huge amount of my portfolio. When I called my Adviser, he told me in his nonchalant way, “Oh don’t worry about it; everyone lost lots of money” At that point, I hadn’t worked in 8 years. I had planned it where I could really shine in my artistic gifts…I was in an Artist colony in San Diego called “Spanish Village.” Located in Balboa Park. When the crash hit, and my portfolio lost a ton of money that I allowed myself to not think about. I decided that I would help as many women as I could connect with to educate them first and foremost. As women, we need to look at retirement differently. Women live longer than men. How we plan for the future make a difference for us.

When I decided I needed to go back into the workforce. The company I wanted to work for needed to want to educated first and fill the needs secondly.

I began my new Career in 2010 with a Not-For-Profit Organization called Modern Woodmen Of America, as a Native California, I never heard of a financial company that actually wants to help people in the community. Modern Woodmen has been around since 1883. In 2022 alone they gave over 17 million Dollar’s to Charites including many that are located in San Diego, I finally found what I was meant to do! Educated women, Uplift and empower those willing to step up to the plate, dust themselves off, and continue helping others.

I feel that I was born go through many storms like the one in 2019. I lost my son he is the one that believed in me when I had no one who believed I could do this career… I know he’s looking down from heaven and is smiling at me… There was a ton I left out but I hope you get a little glimpse of me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all… Starting out with Zero Clients in 2010. I had to learn what net-working was, social media… 2012- 14-year relationship ended when I learned he had another life, including another home wife… In the same community! Everyone knew except me! I was left with nothing.

Lost my son in 2018.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Modern Woodmen Of America?
My sweet spot is retirement planning, giving them the tools needed for creating a Financial Roadmap. It works because as a team they learn about their spending habits and why do they spend? Especially if they don’t need it or always take back to the store for refund? It’s a spending habit that was created because of the way they feel. The way we think about money, good or bad, plays a huge role for my clients.

My target clients are mostly women entrepreneurs. I let them know they are not alone in the journey. Most of my women are having to start over due to death or Divorce of a Partner.

Secondly, I let them know. I’m here, and so what!!! If you’re starting all over. This is your game plan not anyone else’s. I make sure there is no guilt about would of, Could of, Should of…

My job as a Financial Professional is to guide them, encourage them and believe in them. You don’t have to sell anything if you do the right things for the right reasons. Your day will come.

I’m blessed to be included in the “Top 100” Financial Adviser in the entire country. 🙂

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Making an impact. Leaving my prints in the sand for the next generation… I don’t know why we have to get old to have wisdom!

In the end, it’s not about all the money you made. It’s about all those special times and places with people you cared about or that cared enough about you.

How you made them smile or took the time to listen to something they were going through.

By giving of our time, I didn’t realize all the talks and laughter & tears we were making memories, I just thought I was being a friend…
