Today we’d like to introduce you to Laysea Hughes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Laysea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from a small town on the east coast of Florida, and this month I am celebrating five years since I drove across the country in my ’83 VW Westfalia embarking on the Gypsea lifestyle. I originally only intended to travel for pleasure, and somewhere along the way, I was fortunate enough to turn my lifestyle into a business. I have always had a creative passion but never pursued anything professionally. Photography classes in high school were a favorite, mostly studying film and medium format. Now I make a living through branded lifestyle photography, journalistic storytelling and social media influencing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur means you are your boss which in a sense is the hardest and the best facet about this style of business. If there is no work coming through the door then I am the only one who is going to make that possible, likewise, if I want to take a vacation and leave cell phone signal I am the one who gets to make that decision. Living on the road also presents it’s own life challenges but honestly, that is what I love about this lifestyle.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a lifestyle/adventure/travel photographer. I am known for my journalistic storytelling through social media and blog format. I feel my images and writing is authentic and transparent to life’s everyday brilliance and challenges which gives the observer the true sense of the experience.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up a few blocks from the beach, eating pancakes with my family (peanut butter on them of course) and riding bikes as a family (my mom, brother, and dad) down to the inlet where we’d spend our days surfing, building sand castles and playing until the sun went down.
