Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Brodt.
Wholesome Kitchen SD is a family-run, veteran-owned meal delivery company in San Diego County. Leah and James are two siblings that share their passion for fitness and nutrition. Being parents to toddlers, they understand the need for healthy, convenient meals that the whole family can enjoy.
Leah is an award-winning Personal Trainer in San Diego, teaches pre and postnatal yoga in North Park, and has been studying nutrition for over 10 years. She was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in 2012 and had a complete hip replacement in 2013. She started a meal prep business during her rehab and recovery to ensure her clients were eating healthy, proper portions in her absence. Her approach to maintaining a healthy weight is simple: focus on adding organic, whole foods into your diet and eventually the processed food and cravings will disappear. “Let medicine be thy food and let food be thy medicine”.
James is a 20 year USAF veteran who nurtured his taste for international food during his service. He earned a Masters in Sports Fitness with an emphasis on nutrition and applies that knowledge in the kitchen. He maintains an active lifestyle that has roots in soccer, wrestling and snowboarding, and now is firmly entrenched in Crossfit and surfing. He loves the idea of supporting small, homegrown businesses and his vision is to cook meals with ingredients that are sourced by local suppliers with an emphasis on organic, sustainably raised produce, meats, and seafood. James has been feeding and entertaining friends and family in his home his whole life and wants to share this passion with San Diego!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My brother and I work extremely well together. We are both highly competitive, motivated people. Our number one priority is our family and with this business, we are able to stay home with our kids and work the business in the evenings and on weekends. I would say the most difficult part of starting a food delivery business, would be figuring out who our target market is.
Besides being a personal trainer, I am also a Birth Doula. I know a lot of people in the fitness world, as well as the birth world. So, do we focus on people trying to lose weight, or new parents needing healthy food, postpartum? The good news is, our customers want both and we are seeing growth every month. Another struggle we are having is finding and retaining reliable employees. Honestly, being an entrepreneur is hard, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Wholesome Kitchen San Diego – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wholesome Kitchen SD provides paleo-inspired meals to busy San Diego families using locally sourced, organic ingredients that support a healthy, active lifestyle.
Our passion is creating food that is healthy, delicious, and convenient. We have a set menu of five entrees that change each week. We strive to use new and exciting ingredients, always fresh and purchased the day of cooking!
The way it works is pretty simple: Place your order by Friday at noon, and we will deliver your meals between 9 and 11 am the following Monday and Wednesday morning. We will work with you to ensure that your meals arrive at a time that works for your schedule. Recurring orders are welcome and are eligible for an additional 15% off of the entire order. We have individual meals, family meals, postpartum meals and athlete meals. We also have a membership program for subscription meals; the ultimate in convenience and maximum savings!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success through my own happiness. When I feel like my time spent with my business is making a difference, I feel successful. Customers who are feeling better within a week of ordering our meals. New parents who can’t imagine having to shop, cook and clean calling me to say” thank you.” I can’t put a number on it, but I wake up every day and go to bed extremely grateful.
