Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex Holley.
Hi Lex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started baking when I was 16; I wanted to get my mom something nice for Mother’s Day, but I didn’t have a huge budget, so I decided to buy a betty crocker cake mix and some frosting. I made her a pull-apart cupcake flower arrangement; She loved it! And I loved the joy I felt making her smile with something as small as a cupcake. It wasn’t easy to get where I am today, but after stepping out in faith, and letting go of the fear of failure. I’m here with a piping bag and a dream, eagerly expecting God to guide me through the next phase of entrepreneurship.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a bumpy road of setbacks, self-doubt, and fear, but I owe it all to God that I am still here pursuing my purpose. He never gave up on me. I survived a dark season of depression I thought would take me out. Many people told me how gifted I was, but I didn’t believe them; I thought they were being nice because they were my family and friends.
It wasn’t until my depression got so bad, I wanted to kill myself; God stopped me and revealed that I was anointed to use my cake business to glorify His name and spread the gospel. He showed me how many lives would be touched by what He’s going to do through me. If it weren’t for God, I would be dead or at a job I hated with no hope of anything greater.
I can stand here today in confidence and say no man, not even you, can come against God’s plan. If you have a dream, a gift, something that keeps chasing you down, don’t run; pursue it! That’s God letting you in on His plan for you. Take that leap of faith; it’s NEVER too late! I started baking ten years ago, and I’m just now taking myself seriously. God is the restorer of time. I promise, if you’re purposed to do something, God will ensure it gets done!
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a cake decorator and content creator specializing in cupcakes, but I also enjoy making buttercream cakes and cakesicles. I’m most proud of how adventurous I’ve become with baking up new creative flavors beyond the average vanilla and chocolate. What sets me apart from other bakers and content creators is me; no one can do what I do exactly like me.
In a generation of social media and budding entrepreneurs, hundreds and thousands of people do exactly what I am doing, and plenty of them are doing it better! But what God has put in me is something technique, skills, and pizazz can’t trump. There is more than enough room for me in what seems to be an oversaturated market. My goal is to build a community, not a list of clients. My business goes beyond cake transactions; I’m confident I will find my people, and they will find me, and together we’ll build a community of cake lovers who gather in love, happiness, and support of one another. It’s not just cake; it’s community.
Matthew 18:20 NLT
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory isn’t a specific moment but an annual event. Thanksgiving has always been a big deal in my family. We would gather, watch football, crack jokes, and eat good food. As a child, I didn’t realize how precious those moments were, but as an adult, having those moments become fewer and far between, I have a whole new appreciation for them. As much as I would love for my grandma and uncle to be here, to see my progress and success, I know they’re shining down on me in heaven, cheering me on. Our family Thanksgiving traditions were a strong foundation for my business, building on the memories that good food (dessert, in my case) brings people together in love and happiness, and I couldn’t ask for anything better.
