Meet Lia Kinn of Lean Like Lia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lia Kinn.

Lia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At my heaviest, I weighed 172 lbs and had reached a size 11. At the time, I was working a crazy-busy retail job spending 60+ hours a week giving most of my time to my career. Health was not my priority.

I was focused on climbing the corporate chain and continuing my education (working toward my Psychology degree) and felt I had little to no time for myself, let alone diet and exercise… Finally, stress had got the better of me. I was at a point in my life where I didn’t even recognize myself anymore. I had low energy, I lacked motivation, my attitude was off, and physically I was so uncomfortable in my own skin; wearing clothes that never fit me right that I had become so self-conscious, which, of course, was showing up and affecting all parts of my life.

I had tried to lose weight in the past, but nothing ever seemed to work. I couldn’t drink diet-shakes for fat loss, and I loathed being in a gym… Being healthy seemed like such a chore and I genuinely, at this time in my life, felt like I was destined to just “be fat.” They say “everything happens for a reason,” and I truly believe that all those “failed attempts” at weight loss brought me to the exact moment where that would change…

You have to kiss a few bad frogs to find your prince, right? And that’s exactly what happened… Just when I had thought I would never find the right “way” for me, I did! I began a flexible diet I had never even heard of before; macro tracking, and fell in love! I was able to eat foods I loved, REAL foods, and lose weight. Plus, it fits perfectly with my busy life. A diet that was flexible and allowed take out?? Sign me up!

I also learned that exercising at home could be just as effective as gym workouts, so I started to weight lift for 30 minutes a day at home just a few times a week. I lost 45 lbs in 6 months! And, I did it eating dessert every day and never stepping foot in a gym! When my girlfriends saw my transformation and how much I was enjoying this process they wanted in. They asked me to train them, to teach them, and show them the secrets I had discovered to “losing weight the fun way” and so Lean Like Lia was born.

I lost the weight and gained a passion for health and fitness. I realized I had created a weight loss system that more women needed to know about. Now, as a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coaching Specialist, I help busy women lose weight just like I did; a flexible diet plus 30 minute home workouts. It doesn’t get faster and more fun than this!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Losing weight and owning a business are very similar… lots of ups and downs. I’ve come to understand that the ups and downs are part of the process and always will be. The key is what you make these ups and downs mean. I had to learn quickly that the highs and lows are what you make of them, and not to compare your journey to others.

I think we often have unrealistic expectations for what these processes “should” be like, versus seeing them just as they are. A lot of us have the habit of when we “fail” we make that mean something awful about ourselves and our abilities. But in order to succeed we need to work with ourselves and not against ourselves. The reason I was both successful in losing weight and starting a business was that I accepted the failures as part of the process along with the wins, and I didn’t make any of it mean anything about myself.

When I hit a milestone, I really celebrated the win and all my hard work. Success can be fleeting, right? Soaking it up and making the moment last is worthwhile and will cultivate motivation to continue. Then, when you fail (if you’re not failing you’re not trying hard enough), you need to remember that you get to make this mean whatever you want. What if every failure was a lesson? What if you fall down because it’s there that you’re meant to find something?

What if this “failure” is happening for you and not to you? No, the journey is not easy, but you don’t want it to be… That would be boring! Win, and make that mean something amazing about your abilities, lose, and make that mean something amazing about your willingness to learn and carry on.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lean Like Lia story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a women weight loss coach helping busy women lose weight with a flexible diet and 30 minute home workouts for fat loss. My business is Lean Like Lia, an online personal training membership for women all around the world who want one-on-one support throughout their weight loss journey to get them to their goal of fat loss and muscle tone in a fraction of the time. Custom nutrition and workout plans are personally created for each client every 30 days and loaded into the LK app for gals to access anywhere and anytime.

This program is far more than just diet and exercise though… Since I struggled with Binge Eating for many years, my coaching style includes a strong mindset focus on how to stop overeating, break up with binging, repairing your relationship with food, and more importantly the relationship with oneself. I teach women how to regain self-control, cultivate self-love, and become the confident version of themselves they’ve been dreaming about. You’ve never done a weight loss program like this before!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Do things ever just happen by “chance”? Everyone will have their own opinion on that… “Luck” is subjective, really. Believe what makes you feel good is my philosophy. I believe that luck is a feeling… that we feel lucky, right? And, since our thoughts create our feelings, we can then be in control with how “lucky” we feel on a daily basis if we wanted. If you want to feel lucky, in a good way, what thoughts would you need to think?

What parts of your life would you need to notice to realize how lucky you really are? On the contrary, if you’re feeling you’ve gotten a stroke of bad luck, what are you thinking exactly, and is this absolutely true or serving you? When it comes to my life and business, I choose my thoughts very deliberately and work on my perceptions of things often throughout the day to feel successful, “lucky,” and grateful for what I have. If I am feeling not-so-lucky, it’s time to assess what I’m thinking and why…
