Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Menter.
Lindsay, before we jump into specific questions about your business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had a passion for makeup, ever since I can remember. In high school, I had pretty bad acne so I figured out how to do my makeup to still “feel beautiful”. I decided to make a career out of it so I could help other women feel beautiful for their weddings, events, or special occasions. I finally hit a ceiling one day. I was doing a gals makeup with pretty bad skin, and although we covered all her blemishes and she was going to feel beautiful that day, what happens once the makeup is gone? Is she still confident? Does she still feel beautiful? I decided to take the leap and enroll in an esthetician school (California Advanced Esthetics, shameless plug). It was there that I developed a new passion to help women feel beautiful, but this time it was something that they could achieve on their own with the perfect skin care routine that didn’t require make up to cover up the blemishes anymore! I hit the ground running after school, let my dreams run wild, and opened my skin studio in November 2019. This is just the beginning!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of opening my skin care studio with only a year of being a licensed esthetician was the craziest thing I think I could have done. CRAZIEST! Do I even know anything? Am I even good at my job? Do I even know how to run a business? Am I ready for this? But, are we ever really ready? NOPE! Everyone said it was too soon. But the truth is finding a job out of school is near impossible with no experience. Every job I applied for wanted me to be a front desk girl, but I knew I was capable of so much more. I finally asked my instructor, “what should I do”? And she said, “Lindsay you’re talented, you’re a great esthetician, start your own business”. So, I did. I didn’t even think twice. And I’m proud to say it’s going great! I don’t know everything, so I continue to learn new things weekly, get new certifications, take classes, and ask questions. I achieve incredible results will all of my guests, I’m a great esthetician. I’m learning how to run a business and am asking a million questions along the way. I’m still not “ready”, but I’m faithful to my craft, reliable to my guests, and teachable as all get out, so that’s as ready as I really can be!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The name Jade + Aloe was birthed from my love for the desert and plants! I looked up every desert plant, sorted out which ones had skincare benefits, and landed on “jade” and “aloe”. I am a certified acne specialist, so I specialize in getting my guest’s results. We are not a day spa, we are a skin studio that focuses on getting skin clear and beautiful through chemical peels and a legit home routine. We also do waxing, brows, lashes, and makeup (my first love, always). I love my brand and location because people know it as the “fun place to get a facial with the rad mural”. My beautiful friend Heidi (@heidilakincreative) hand painted this gorgeous mural on our wall and people RAVE about it. People come, they feel at home, they get an amazing facial, have great conversations about life, leave with an at home regimen, and then come back because they’re seeing great improvement in their skin. We aren’t your everyday place, and I’m proud of that!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think my proudest moment has just been the persistence of never giving up. School took me longer than it should have, I procrastinated on taking my state board, and I felt like giving up a few times. I’m proud that I stuck through it, stopped comparing myself to other people, and ran my race. I didn’t stop until I was good at what I was doing, and then I became better. I’m proud of myself for taking risks, and they are paying off.
