Meet Lovejoy Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lovejoy Creations.

Lovejoy graduated from Savannah College of Art & Design in 2003. Her goal when leaving Savannah was to earn a living as an artist and to be creative and active every day. She then spent the next seven years developing her style with the palette knife and bold use of color in Sedona, AZ. “I usually don’t know what my final art piece will look like when I start, only the subject and basic composition. Finding most of my creative flow within the wildlife genre, I developed a way to sculpt with paint, layer by layer. Creating a beautiful play of lights and shadows, full of unexpected colors side by side. It’s a dance, a push and pull until the form becomes whole. I find so much peace when I’m creating,” – Lovejoy.

In Sedona, Lovejoy commissioned and sold a well-rounded collection of artwork, including the creation of a 51×7 ft. public mural titled, A Timeless Day in Sedona. Lovejoy also enjoys the outdoors – mountain biking, hiking, exploring, and loving life – which all tie in and inspire her creativity.

Lovejoy currently resides in San Diego, CA and operates a studio/gallery in historic Liberty Station where she teaches painting classes and sells original works of art. Her most popular class is “Paint Your Pet”, Over the last 5 years, she has helped over 4000 first-time & beginner students to paint their pet (or favorite animal) .

Please tell us about your art.
Lovejoy’s art/paintings are all about animals and bold unexpected colors. With the use of a palette knife she scraps over 60 layers of paint onto the surface creating a mesmerizing depth and texture in her subjects. Each person that looks at Lovejoy’s paintings, sees something slightly different and is drawn into the intense eyes of the animals. One cannot help but smile or feel happier after witnessing the impressionistic movement of Lovejoy’s animals. These paintings come from Lovejoys soul, she has to paint to maintain her balance.

For the classes that Lovejoy teaches, ALL of her students walk away impressed with that they accomplished. Lovejoy’s students are generally first-time & beginner painters, and pretty much all had a “bad” art experience in their early life or simply think that they are not creative. Though after a class with Lovejoy, your perspective on the world and your creative abilities will be altered, Lovejoy is a very patient and encouraging teacher, her classes are small, so you get a lot of personalized attention. Check out her yelp reviews if you still need encouragement to try a class. (https://www.yelp.com/biz/lovejoy-creations-studio-san-diego)

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
If you are an artist Lovejoy advises to learn the art of business, networking and social media.

Talent is not enough anymore, you have to be smart and have a balanced business sense. Utilize YouTube, your local library and networking seminars, to grow your knowledge, never stop learning. Be determined and willing to work hard (for years) to build your reputation, wisdom and craftsmanship.

Financially learn to live below your means. If you make $2500/month, your expenses should only be $2000/month. Save the remaining amount of money. You should strive to have a savings account that has enough funds to pay your bills for 6+ months, should something happen to you (or the economy)
