Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Gonzalez.

Luis Gonzalez

Hi Luis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all began as a summer job for me, my dad had been a painter my entire lifetime (20+ years), so as soon as I was old enough to be able to help out every summer I would go work with my dad or even during winter break and spring break. Sometimes during school break I would still have assignments for school which I had to study for so whenever I couldn’t be of much help I would study and read my math books, being that math was my favorite subject. I didn’t always go to work because I wanted to but because most of the time my parents at the time couldn’t afford to hire someone to take care of me, so if their were moments where I couldn’t help my dad much, whether it was because it was a bit more dangerous work or heavy lifting, I would go help my mom clean houses. Of course I wouldn’t work for free I had to charge at least $10-$20 haha. But at a young age I always tried my best to help my parents in what I could so I would save my money in order to buy myself anything I wanted in order for my parents to not have to spend money on me. As time went on I really started growing a passion for doing what my dad did which was painting. Seeing the before and afters of the work that we did really got me excited and seeing the joy in the clients face of turning what they pictured in their mind into a reality. I wanted to really learn this industry and what we do from the beginning so I started off as prepping for my dad full time as soon as I got out of high school. I wanted to help out my parents by covering my own expenses and having transportation so I worked two jobs painting and working graveyard shifts at a warehouse. I would go from one job to another than come sleep and wake up again 6 days a week for a year and half. My mind and body was telling me that they were tired and my parents noticed so in order to help my dad told me he’d pay me more but only if I quit my other job cause he didn’t like seeing me overly tired, at that point he was more established and was working on his own as a sole proprietor for 10+ years plus. I agreed and at the same time I know both my parents are getting older day by day and I wanna be able to help them out as much as I can and return the favor and provide for them, so I decided to study the trade more and learn more and I told my dad it was time we took it a step further so I instead of him being a sole proprietor I told him I wanted us to expand I got my own license and turned our company into a corporation and began what is now known as GQ Painting Inc., and have been in business under GQ for 2 years and counting. It has been in honor to be able to work along side with my father and to continue to grow not only as a family but as business partners and seeing our progress has been very meaningful to us. Seeing the struggle we went through to where we are now is such a special feeling and we continue to learn more and grow day by day and we have made so many connections and have met so many people to this day doing what we do, and we strive to continue to grow and be able to create opportunities not just for us but for others as well and thank you to everyone who supports us day by day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not, there has been many struggles whether its personal family struggle like a sudden loss or even financial struggles like when work slows down or such as events like the pandemic where there is so much going on, or moments where you really have to invest in what we do but have other expenses that you have going on at the same moment or being denied certain opportunities that you anticipated but we never gave up and continue to strive day by day

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

I’m proud of being able to say that we have been able to establish a company that continues to grow day by day and being to work which such special people that have really inspired us through out the way. People not only support a family business but a local business and we’d be more than happy to help you guys out in anything that we may be able to assist you in.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about our city is that everyone is so welcoming we’ve lived in Encinitas for the majority of our life but recently moved to Carlsbad and in both locations our neighbors have been very welcoming, everyone makes you feel like a family and being that we are a very close family it is something that we appreciate and cherish a lot and especially being that we can share that not just with our personal family but our neighborhood family is something truly special. What I like least would be that over time is has become a very populated area over the years but it is still a good feeling that we can share the same welcoming feeling to a lot more people that continue to move in over time.
