Today we’d like to introduce you to My Luu.
My, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been drawn to art at a very young age. I would spend countless hours in my bedroom drawing images of fashion models and various objects that inspired me. It was an activity that not only sharpened my creativity, but allowed me to express myself. I was told early on however, that art was more of a hobby as opposed to a reasonable career. This mentality led me down a generic path that many young adults found themselves in their early twenties. I obtained a degree I considered to be most reflective of my passions, worked in a corporate setting I thought was necessary to lead a fulfilling life, but in the end was still never truly satisfied.
I began to focus my energy back to art in early 2017. At the time it served as a creative outlet for me and I enjoyed sharing my work though Instagram. I slowly started receiving inquiries for my art and began selling them as a side project. As the requests continued to trickle in and my passion for producing grew, I decided to treat my art as a separate entity. I created an additional Instagram account to showcase my work, and even invested in designing a website solely for my art.
In 2018, I met my boyfriend who has been my biggest push, supporter, and creative partner in transforming my art into an actual brand. Together we began producing content for my art account and website, and I found myself devoting more and more time into my illustrations.
Today, I am hard at work preparing for my first art exhibit this summer (July 2019). It will be my first step in celebrating myself as an artist. My journey has only just begun and I am so grateful I took the dive to take my passion more seriously.
Has it been a smooth road?
For my first tattoo, I chose a quote that I resonated with at the time and continue to resonate with today, “Nothing worth having comes easy.” Pursuing my art has been a direct reflection of this quote in action. It has been challenging to balance a full time job, manage time with loved ones, and find time to dedicate to your craft. There were days where I would be too exhausted to make dinner, let alone pick up a pencil to draw. I’ve discovered however, that when I dedicate time to areas in my life I feel passionate about, it makes it all worthwhile. The more energy you put into something you truly want, the closer you are to achieving it. Like the saying goes, “if it was easy everyone would do it.”
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a minimalist artist. I find it calming to draw clean lines and showcase the simplicity of black and white space. The majority of my work is ink on canvas, but I sometimes switch to watercolors as well.
I believe in the idea of turning the subtle and minimal into something much more alluring. Whether it’s the curve of a woman’s lip, or the lining of her face, it’s always the simple things that reveal or mean the most.
My work encourages others to understand that lines can not only be straightforward, but possess great depth as well. I find that colors have a tendency to distract viewers and influence the emotion of a piece. I want viewers to interpret my pieces through their own experiences by solely using a black and white color scheme.
As an artist, I have the ability to bring attention to causes I feel strongly about. I will be donating all of my proceeds from my first art exhibit to the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. I hope to continue to give a percentage of my profits to organizations working to rescue animals in need in my future projects.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel San Diego is such an incredible place to start out as an artist. The creative community has been so supportive towards me, and I am amazed at the amount of undiscovered talent in this city. I feel San Diego has only just begun showcasing our work as artists. I know the opportunities for this industry will only continue to expand in the years ahead, and the projects we achieve together will be a force you can’t ignore.
